An elderly van driver who sustained critical injuries during a violent clash linked to political and social rivalry in Shailkupa Upazila of Jhenaidah has died after several days of treatment. He passed away late on Monday night while being transferred to Dhaka for advanced medical care, adding fresh tension to an already volatile situation. Police have said that additional security measures have been put in place and that the overall law and order situation remains under control.
The deceased, Eken Molla, 65, was a resident of Bogura village in Bogura Union under Shailkupa Upazila. He was the son of the late Adalat Molla. According to local residents, he was known as a supporter of Rakibul Islam Khan Dipu, a former chairman of Bogura Union and a local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Police and local sources said the violence erupted on 28 June following a dispute reportedly involving narcotics, which later escalated into a broader confrontation over political influence and social dominance between two rival factions associated with the BNP. Witnesses said the confrontation quickly turned violent, with participants using sticks and locally made weapons.
During the clash, Eken Molla suffered severe injuries after being struck repeatedly. Alarmed residents rescued him from the scene and rushed him to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex, where he received emergency treatment. As his condition rapidly deteriorated, attending doctors referred him to Kushtia General Hospital for specialised care.
Despite receiving intensive medical treatment, his injuries continued to worsen. On Monday, physicians decided to transfer him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. However, he died shortly before reaching the capital, bringing a tragic end to several days of critical care.
The death has heightened concern among residents, many of whom say political rivalry, disputes over local influence and longstanding social divisions have periodically triggered violent confrontations in different parts of Shailkupa. According to local accounts, seemingly minor disagreements have on several occasions escalated into serious clashes, creating fear and uncertainty within surrounding communities.
Officer-in-Charge Humayun Kabir Molla of Shailkupa Police Station confirmed that one of the injured victims had died following the clash. He said the incident was being treated with utmost seriousness and that police were conducting a thorough investigation to establish the full sequence of events. Efforts to identify and arrest those directly involved in the violence are continuing.
Police also stated that investigators are examining the underlying causes of the confrontation, including the extent of each participant’s involvement and whether any individual or group incited the violence. Authorities said legal procedures following the victim’s death would be completed before further action is taken in accordance with the law.
Additional police vigilance has been introduced in the affected area to prevent any further deterioration of the situation. Law enforcement officials maintain that the security situation remains stable, although they continue to monitor developments closely to avoid any renewed unrest.
Many local residents have called for a fair, impartial and transparent investigation so that those responsible can be brought before the courts without delay. They have also urged the administration to adopt more effective preventive measures to reduce recurring violence linked to political rivalry and local dominance, expressing hope that lasting action will help restore confidence and ensure greater public safety in the area.
