Security Escalated Nationally as Police Probe Threat to Operational Fleets

Police Headquarters has placed law enforcement formations nationwide on high alert following actionable intelligence warning of planned attacks on vehicles utilised by the force. All metropolitan, range, district, and specialised units have been directed to enforce stringent security measures and maintain maximum operational readiness to counter potential sabotage.

The classified directive was transmitted on Saturday, 1 August, directly from the Operations Control Room at Police Headquarters. Intelligence disclosures indicate that extremist elements and subversive factions may attempt to target official police transport—including utility jeeps, troop carriers, pick-up vans, and buses—in an effort to disrupt public safety and destabilise law and order.

To mitigate operational vulnerabilities, the guidance strictly forbids personnel from leaving transport unattended under any circumstances. When operational halts or temporary parking are unavoidable during field duties, vehicles must be positioned in designated secure areas and remain under uninterrupted physical guard.

The mandate further extends to static transport assets. Unit heads are required to fortify security perimeters around vehicles parked within police stations, district police lines, unit headquarters, and administrative compounds. Senior officers across all jurisdictions have been instructed to treat the advisory with the utmost priority and execute immediate security audits.

Highlighting the context behind the heightened threat assessment, Additional Inspector General of Police (Crime and Operations), Khondoker Rafiqul Islam, explained that the month of August presents recurring security risks. Outlawed organisations and subversive groups traditionally attempt to stage covert activities or carry out targeted attacks during this specific window.

The month of August holds significant political and security importance in Bangladesh, associated with key historical milestones such as National Mourning Day on 15 August and the memory of the 21 August grenade attack. Security services across the country traditionally adopt an augmented readiness posture during this timeframe to thwart unlawful gatherings, protect vital national infrastructure, and safeguard public property.

Police Headquarters reiterated that these preventive security protocols are vital to safeguarding state assets, ensuring force protection, and preserving public order across the nation during this sensitive period.
