Dhaka University Metro Station Suspends Train Services Temporarily

Metro rail services at the Dhaka University station have been temporarily suspended this afternoon. Trains will bypass the station from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Wednesday, 1 July. The state-owned operator, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), announced the sudden service modification in an emergency bulletin issued at midday. According to the transit authority, the measure was implemented following an explicit request from the Dhaka University administration.

During this three-hour window, commercial trains will operate according to their regular schedules between Motijheel and Uttara North. However, they will not drop off or pick up passengers at the university campus hub. Instead, all transiting trains will pass directly through the station platforms without stopping.

Administrative Decisions and Historical Celebrations

While the official notification from DMTCL did not explicitly state the security or administrative reasons behind the suspension, the timing coincides with a major landmark for the institution. Founded in 1921, Dhaka University celebrates its founding anniversary on 1 July. The campus traditionally hosts a variety of colourful rallies, cultural programmes, and discussion sessions to mark the day. The temporary station closure is widely understood to be a crowd-management measure aimed at regulating the influx of external visitors and maintaining security and order across the campus during the peak hours of the anniversary festivities.

This is not the first time DMTCL has altered its operations to accommodate specific administrative or safety requirements near major academic institutions. Similar temporary suspensions or restrictions have been introduced during large-scale public gatherings and university admission tests in the past to manage heavy commuter traffic and avoid congestion at the concourse levels.

Guidance for Commuters

The abrupt suspension of services has inconvenienced hundreds of regular commuters, including university students, faculty members, and administrative staff who rely heavily on the high-speed transit network for their daily travel. Commuters intending to reach the university or surrounding areas like Nilkhet and Shahbagh during these three hours are advised to modify their travel plans.

Transit officials have suggested using alternative nearby stations, such as the Shahbagh or Secretariat metro rail stations, to reach their destinations. DMTCL authorities have expressed their sincere regrets for the unexpected inconvenience caused to passengers. Regular operations and normal train stops at the Dhaka University station are expected to resume promptly at 6:00 pm, once the three-hour suspension period concludes.
