Pakistan, Saudi Arabia Unite for Jeddah Cricket Stadium Project

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have taken a significant step towards strengthening cricket ties by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to support the construction of an international cricket stadium in Jeddah. The agreement, announced in a joint statement on Wednesday, brings together the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation (SACF) in a partnership aimed at expanding the game’s footprint in the Kingdom.

According to the joint statement, the agreement extends well beyond the development of a single sporting venue. It reflects a broader ambition to establish a sustainable future for cricket in Saudi Arabia through long-term investment, trusted collaboration and shared strategic goals.

The statement described the initiative as more than just the construction of an international-standard stadium, saying it represents “shared aspirations, trusted partnership and sustainable investment” designed to foster the long-term growth of cricket across the country.

The memorandum was formally signed by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and SACF President Prince Saud bin Mishal bin Mohammed Al Saud. The signing marks a new phase of cooperation between the two cricket organisations as Saudi Arabia continues its efforts to strengthen its sporting infrastructure and broaden participation in a range of international sports.

Commenting on the agreement, Naqvi said the Pakistan Cricket Board was honoured to contribute to Saudi Arabia’s exciting cricket journey. He added that the partnership would help strengthen the sport, bring cricket-loving communities in both countries closer together and create a lasting legacy for future generations.

The collaboration reflects Saudi Arabia’s growing interest in developing cricket alongside its wider investment in sport. While football, Formula One, golf and boxing have attracted global attention in recent years, cricket has also emerged as an area of increasing focus, supported by a sizeable expatriate population from South Asia where the sport enjoys immense popularity.

Cricket in Saudi Arabia traces its roots back to the early 1960s, when migrants from Pakistan and India introduced the game to the Kingdom. Since then, the sport has gradually developed through organised domestic competitions and community participation.

Saudi Arabia’s progress on the international stage has also been reflected in its relationship with the International Cricket Council (ICC). The country became an ICC Affiliate Member in 2003 before being granted Associate Membership in 2016, enabling it to participate more actively in international cricket development programmes and ICC-sanctioned competitions.

The proposed international stadium in Jeddah is expected to provide a dedicated venue for domestic and international cricket while supporting player development and the wider growth of the sport within Saudi Arabia. The agreement also underlines the strengthening sporting relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, with both sides expressing confidence that the partnership will contribute to cricket’s long-term development in the region.
