Cristiano Ronaldo has firmly rejected suggestions that he will retire from international football at the end of the FIFA World Cup, insisting that his full focus remains on helping Portugal rather than making decisions about his future.
Speculation over the Portuguese captain’s international retirement gathered pace after his elder sister, Katia Aveiro, claimed that the ongoing World Cup would be his final tournament in national colours. Speaking to Portuguese broadcaster Sport TV before Portugal’s Round of 32 clash against Croatia in Toronto, she described the competition as Ronaldo’s “last dance”.
“I have information from a reliable source, and I believe this will be his final tournament with the national team,” Katia said. “Let’s enjoy every moment of it.”
Ronaldo, however, quickly dismissed those claims after Portugal secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Croatia to book their place in the Round of 16.
Addressing reporters after the match, the 41-year-old made it clear that retirement is not something he is considering during the tournament.
“At this moment, it is not important,” Ronaldo said. “There will be plenty of time to discuss that after the tournament, whether we win or lose. I will speak with my family before making the best decision. I no longer make decisions based on emotion or impulse. Everything is considered calmly now. The only thing that matters to me at this stage is enjoying the present and helping the national team.”
His comments effectively ended the immediate speculation surrounding his international future, although he stopped short of confirming whether he intends to continue playing beyond the World Cup.
While questions over retirement dominated the headlines before kick-off, Ronaldo answered many of his critics on the pitch with another landmark performance.
The Portuguese superstar finally scored his first-ever goal in the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup, ending one of the few statistical gaps in an extraordinary international career. The goal, converted from the penalty spot, also saw him set another historic record.
At the age of 41 years and 147 days, Ronaldo became the oldest player ever to score in a World Cup knockout match, surpassing the previous record held by Lionel Messi. The achievement added yet another milestone to a career already filled with individual honours and record-breaking accomplishments.
The penalty also extended Ronaldo’s own record as the highest goalscorer in the history of men’s international football, taking his tally to 146 international goals. Across club and international football combined, his professional career total now stands at 976 goals, leaving him just 24 short of the remarkable 1,000-goal milestone he has openly targeted.
Portugal eventually sealed victory in dramatic fashion when Gonçalo Ramos struck a late winner to secure a 2-1 triumph over Croatia. The result ensured Portugal’s progression to the quarter-finals, where they will face reigning European champions Spain in one of the tournament’s most eagerly anticipated fixtures.
For now, Ronaldo has made one point abundantly clear. His future can wait. His priority is leading Portugal’s pursuit of World Cup glory, with retirement discussions postponed until the tournament reaches its conclusion.
