FIFA Faces Fresh Backlash Over World Cup Ticket Prices

FIFA has come under renewed criticism over its World Cup ticketing policy after tickets for England’s Round of 16 match against Mexico appeared on the governing body’s official resale platform for several thousand pounds, reigniting concerns about affordability and fairness for supporters.

The latest controversy follows earlier criticism surrounding FIFA’s decision to introduce a dynamic pricing model before the tournament began. While the governing body defended the system as an industry-standard approach, supporters’ groups argue that it has made attending major World Cup matches increasingly expensive for ordinary fans.

England are scheduled to face Mexico in the last 16 on Monday at the iconic Azteca Stadium. Following England’s 2-1 victory over DR Congo, which secured their place in the knockout stage, supporters who had previously purchased tickets were permitted to relist them through FIFA’s official resale portal. Soon afterwards, some of those tickets appeared online at exceptionally high asking prices, prompting widespread criticism.

According to the Football Association (FA), the tickets in question had originally been allocated to members of the England Supporters Travel Club through a ballot held last December. The resale option became available on Wednesday after England’s qualification for the knockout round was confirmed.

The Football Supporters’ Association strongly criticised the situation. In comments to BBC, the organisation said FIFA had deliberately created an online ticket exchange system that allows tickets to be resold at inflated prices while also collecting a 15 per cent fee from both buyers and sellers on each transaction.

The supporters’ body said it had consistently criticised FIFA throughout the tournament for policies that increase the financial burden on travelling fans. At the same time, it added that supporters attempting to profit by offering tickets at unreasonable prices also deserved criticism and should not be encouraged.

The debate has once again highlighted the wider issue of balancing commercial interests with accessibility at the world’s biggest football tournament. Although FIFA’s official resale platform was introduced to reduce unauthorised ticket trading and help genuine supporters transfer unused tickets, critics argue that allowing substantial mark-ups undermines those objectives.

FIFA has previously defended its pricing strategy, stating that its variable pricing model reflects common practice across the sports and entertainment industries. According to the organisation, ticket prices are adjusted in response to demand, sales trends and expected attendance in order to maximise stadium occupancy while ensuring what it describes as fair market value for each event.

Despite those assurances, many supporters believe the system has pushed the cost of attending high-profile World Cup matches beyond the reach of average fans. The latest dispute over resale prices has therefore intensified calls for FIFA to review its ticketing policies and introduce stronger safeguards to ensure that genuine football supporters are not priced out of the sport’s most prestigious tournament.
