A local leader of the Awami Jubo League has died following a targeted late-night ambush by unidentified armed assailants in Bhairab, situated in Kishoreganj district. The deceased, identified as Mohammad Alamin Saikat, was the general secretary of the Bhairab Municipal Jubo League committee. He succumbed to catastrophic injuries shortly after being admitted in a critical condition to a hospital in Dhaka in the early hours of Sunday.
The assault took place at roughly midnight on Saturday in a quiet, secluded corner of the Bhairab Bazar commercial district. According to local witnesses and neighborhood residents, a gang of masked attackers lay in wait before intercepting Saikat as he passed through the area. The assailants struck him repeatedly on the head with sharp-edged domestic weapons and deliberately severed the tendon of one of his legs to immobilise him. After inflicting grievous wounds, the attackers fled through nearby alleys into the night, leaving the victim bleeding heavily on the pavement.
Local traders and passers-by, alerted by the commotion, found Saikat collapsed in a pool of blood. They placed him onto an autorickshaw and transported him to the state-run Chandiber Upazila Health Complex. Attending medical officers administered emergency first aid to control the bleeding; however, facing acute trauma to the skull and severe arterial damage in the lower extremity, the on-duty doctors advised immediate transfer to a specialised hospital in Dhaka.
Relatives quickly arranged an emergency ambulance to make the journey to the capital. Despite their efforts, attending medical personnel at the Dhaka hospital declared him dead on arrival, confirming that extensive blood loss and severe head trauma proved fatal.
The brazen killing has triggered considerable tension and widespread unease across Bhairab town, prompting law enforcement to intensify security measures and patrol key points within the municipality. Police officers and local journalists visited the crime scene overnight to inspect the surroundings, secure potential evidence, and interview eyewitnesses.
The Officer-in-Charge of Bhairab Police Station confirmed that police units responded swiftly to the initial reports, initiating preliminary inquiries to determine how the ambush was planned. Detectives are reviewing all potential angles, including local political rivalries and personal disputes, to establish the motive behind the murder and identify the perpetrators.
Relatives confirmed that the body remains at the hospital mortuary awaiting an official post-mortem examination, following which the family will finalise the timing of the funeral prayers and burial arrangements.
