Police in Keraniganj have arrested four active members of an organised robbery ring armed with lethal domestic weapons while they were preparing to execute a raid during the early hours of Sunday. The targeted night-time intervention, conducted by personnel from the Kalatia Police Outpost, effectively thwarted the planned heist before the gang could strike neighbouring properties.
Acting on precise intelligence regarding criminal movements in the area, a specialised operational team led by the Kalatia Police Outpost In-Charge quietly surrounded the perimeter beneath a Grameenphone telecommunications mast in Bana Kandi village, located within Hazratpur Union. Tip-offs indicated that a cohort of roughly a dozen individuals had assembled at the secluded spot around 2:30 AM, distributing weapons and coordinating their logistics to carry out robberies across residential quarters and local commercial establishments.
As police officers closed in to secure the ground, the gang noticed the presence of law enforcement and attempted to disperse into adjoining open fields and dark alleyways. Following a brief pursuit through the unlit terrain, the police contingent successfully detained four suspects, though several accomplices managed to evade capture under the cover of night. A subsequent physical search of the apprehended individuals yielded a cache of sharp domestic weapons, including heavy iron rods and indigenous blades meant for breaking and entering.
The detained men have been identified as Mohammad Shamim, alias Mozam Dakat (28), from Bada Kachna village in Shariatpur’s Gosairhat upazila; Shanto, alias Sumon (26), residing in the Kholamora locality under Keraniganj Model Police Station; Mohammad Moktar Hossain (27), from Abdul Hakim village in Kurigram’s Ulipur upazila; and Shahidul Islam (22), also originating from Bada Kachna in Gosairhat.
A verification of police database records revealed that the primary suspect, Shamim—known locally as “Mozam Dakat”—is a seasoned criminal facing substantial legal scrutiny. Investigators noted that Shamim is already named in at least 10 formal cases lodged across multiple police stations, featuring charges of armed robbery, extortion, and highway mugging.
During initial interrogation at the police station, the suspects admitted that they had congregated near the telecom installation with weapons specifically to launch coordinated break-ins within the Hazratpur neighbourhood.
Officers at the Kalatia Police Outpost confirmed that specialized search units are currently conducting drives across neighbouring areas to identify and arrest the remaining accomplices who fled the scene. A formal case is being initiated at the Keraniganj Model Police Station, and the four arrested individuals will be produced before the relevant judicial magistrate following standard procedural formalities.
