Man Arrested for Border Infiltration Attempt in Panchagarh

A Bangladeshi man has been arrested on allegations of attempting to illegally cross into India through the Panchagarh border in the north of the country.

The incident took place on Saturday night in the Amar Khana area of the Boda upazila, under the Barashashi Union, close to the Barashashi border outpost. Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh detained the suspect during a routine patrol near the frontier. Officials later confirmed the arrest and subsequent legal proceedings.

The detainee has been identified as Asim Biswas, 43, a resident of Routara area in Magura Sadar upazila. According to authorities, he was apprehended at around 11:30pm near the international boundary marker 778, Sub-Pillar 7, approximately 150 yards inside Bangladeshi territory. Security personnel said he was moving through the area with the intention of crossing the border into India without proper authorisation.

Following his detention, Biswas was handed over to Boda Police Station the same night. A case was later filed against him under the Passport Act by Subedar Ekabbar Rahman of the Barashashi Border Outpost. Police confirmed that he was shown as arrested in the case and produced before the court on Sunday afternoon.

Lieutenant Colonel Sirajul Islam, commanding officer of the Nilphamari 56 Border Guard Bangladesh Battalion, confirmed the arrest and said the suspect was detained during a routine border patrol operation aimed at preventing illegal crossings and maintaining security along the frontier.

During initial questioning, the accused reportedly told investigators that he had attempted to enter India illegally in search of employment opportunities. Authorities, however, have not independently verified his claim.

The Panchagarh border region, like several other frontier areas in northern Bangladesh, remains under constant surveillance due to its proximity to India. Security patrols are frequently intensified in response to concerns over unauthorised movement across the border, human trafficking risks, and other cross-border offences.

Law enforcement officials stated that legal procedures are ongoing and further action will be taken in accordance with existing immigration and border control laws.
