Fifty Human Trafficking Victims Repatriated From India via Benapole

Indian authorities have repatriated 50 Bangladeshi nationals, including men, women, and children, who fell victim to cross-border human trafficking networks. The returnees crossed back into Bangladesh through the Benapole land port on Sunday afternoon, following the issuance of special travel permits by the government. The group was processed at the border before being formally handed over to the local police and non-governmental human rights organisations for rehabilitation.

The repatriated cohort comprises 40 men, six women, and four children. The transfer occurred at the international checkpost line, where border guards and immigration officials from both nations coordinated the logistics. Representatives from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), India’s Border Security Force (BSF), immigration police wings, and prominent rights groups were present during the formal handover ceremony, which concluded late in the evening.

Exploitation, Detention, and the Rescue Process

According to human rights advocates, the victims were originally lured across the porous border with false promises of lucrative employment opportunities in various metropolitan hubs across India. Traffickers routinely exploit vulnerable families facing severe economic hardships in rural Bangladesh. Once inside Indian territory, the promises evaporated, and the victims were subjected to hazardous labour conditions and systemic exploitation.

The ordeal intensified for many when Indian law enforcement agencies detained them for illegal entry. After serving various sentences in judicial custody, the individuals were rescued from prisons by local Indian human rights organisations and subsequently relocated to secure shelter homes. Following extensive nationality verification processes between the ministries of foreign affairs of both countries, the repatriation was finally facilitated through emergency travel documents.

Saiful Islam, the Officer-in-Charge of Benapole Immigration, stated that the arriving nationals underwent rigorous administrative and health screening before being transferred to the Benapole Port Police Station. Following the completion of these initial legal formalities, the authorities transferred physical custody of the returnees to two prominent non-governmental organisations: ‘Rights Jessore’ and ‘Justice & Care’.

Rehabilitation and Institutional Support

The Benapole Port Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Ashraf Hossain, confirmed that the non-governmental organisations have assumed full responsibility for providing legal counsel, immediate psychological support, and long-term rehabilitation. The agencies are currently arranging safe transportation to reunite the individuals with their respective families across different districts.

Binoy Krishna Mallick, the Executive Director of Rights Jessore, highlighted the systemic nature of cross-border trafficking, emphasising that economic distress remains the primary driver. He explained that these organisations do not merely focus on immediate repatriation. Moving forward, both Rights Jessore and Justice & Care plan to provide comprehensive legal aid to help victims pursue criminal charges against the local agents who trafficked them. Additionally, the organisations will enrol the returnees in specialised skills development and livelihood training programmes to ensure sustainable economic reintegration and prevent re-trafficking.
