Dhaka South City Corporation Clears Unauthorised Street Encroachments

The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has executed a comprehensive anti-encroachment drive across Ward 19, clearing a series of illegal structures and temporary shops that had taken over public roads and pavements. During the operation, municipal authorities also penalised eight commercial nurseries operating unlawfully on state-owned land.

The mobile court eviction was carried out on Sunday afternoon in the Sabjibagan area under the direct supervision of DSCC Property Officer and Executive Magistrate Hasiba Khan. The task force dismantled various makeshift stalls, extended storefronts, and unauthorised installations, immediately reopening the gridlocked corridors to the general public.

Strict Fines and Ultimatum for Illegal Nurseries

Alongside the removal of pedestrian blockages, the mobile court targeted institutional encroachment on government land. Eight separate cases were filed against local nursery operators who had expanded their commercial businesses deep into public territory without authorisation.

The executive magistrate imposed an aggregate fine of 8,000 taka across the eight offending nursery owners, working out to a standard 1,000 taka fine per establishment. To ensure the land is permanently reclaimed, the DSCC issued a strict directive ordering the business operators to completely remove all remaining plants, pots, and commercial inventory from the government site by 6:00 pm on Sunday evening.

Commitment to Pedestrian Safety and Urban Order

Pedestrian safety and pavement encroachment have long been persistent challenges across the capital, as unauthorised commercial activities frequently force commuters onto active roads, worsening traffic congestion and increasing accident risks. Municipal officials stated that this recent intervention is part of a broader, sustained strategy to restore urban discipline and improve the overall liveability of the city.

According to a formal brief issued by the DSCC administration following the conclusion of the drive, the civic body intends to maintain a zero-tolerance policy against the unlawful occupation of public properties. The corporation emphasised that these enforcement operations and mobile court inspections will continue on a regular basis across all jurisdictions. The primary objectives remain the preservation of open city spaces, the maintenance of environmental equilibrium, and the guarantee of unhindered, safe movement for everyday pedestrians.
