Distraught Brazil Supporter Commits Suicide in Kushtia Following Defeat

A tragic incident has shocked the local community in Kumarkhali Upazila of Kushtia, where a 19-year-old football enthusiast reportedly took his own life following a defeat suffered by the Brazilian national football team. The young man, identified as Ratan, was found dead on Monday in the Ghoraighat area of Kaya Union. The sudden demise of the teenager, who was the father of a two-month-old daughter, has cast a dark shadow of grief over the entire neighbourhood.

Ratan was the third son of Hossein Mistry, a resident of the Ghoraighat locality within Kumarkhali. According to local sources, family members became alarmed when they noticed the door to Ratan’s room remained locked from the inside for an unusually long period. After repeatedly calling out his name and receiving no response, they looked through the window and discovered him hanging from the ceiling. The family immediately broke open the door and rushed him to a local medical practitioner, who pronounced the youth dead on arrival.

Neighbours described Ratan as a polite, well-mannered individual who was highly regarded in the village. He was also known as an exceptionally passionate follower of Brazilian football. Local residents asserted that Ratan had been in a state of severe emotional distress since witnessing Brazil’s recent defeat against Norway. The unexpected sporting loss apparently triggered a profound psychological breakdown, culminating in the tragic act.

Expressing his condolences, Yunus Ali, the President of the Kaya Union branch of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), described the death as an incredibly untoward and heartbreaking incident. Meanwhile, Shumon, a local Union Parishad member representing Ward 4, confirmed that he had been notified of the suicide. He noted, however, that he could not definitively verify whether the football match was the sole catalyst for the tragedy or if other underlying personal factors were involved.

Law enforcement officials have since initiated standard administrative procedures. Amirul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Kumarkhali Police Station, stated that a police team visited the spot to prepare an inquest report on the body. Given that the grieving family and local public representatives raised no allegations of foul play, and formally requested an exemption from a post-mortem examination, the police authorised the release of the body to the family for traditional burial rites.
