Husband Accused of Killing Wife After Family Dispute

A 30-year-old housewife was allegedly beaten to death with a spade by her husband following a domestic dispute in Dinajpur’s Phulbari Upazila, in an incident that has shocked the local community and once again drawn attention to the devastating consequences of prolonged family conflict.

The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday, 7 July, in Swajanpukur (Bundipara) village within the municipal area. The victim, Kulsum Akter Mimi, was the daughter of the late Abdul Kashem. The accused, Manik Hossain, is the son of Abdul Matin of East Gouripara village.

According to police and family members, Manik Hossain had been living as a resident son-in-law at his wife’s parental home since their marriage. The couple had three sons together. Relatives alleged that Manik had remained without stable employment for a considerable period, placing the family under financial strain. They claimed that ongoing economic hardship and disagreements over household responsibilities frequently led to arguments between the couple, creating a troubled domestic environment.

Family members said another dispute broke out before dawn on Tuesday. During the argument, Kulsum reportedly asked her husband to sleep in another room. However, Manik allegedly insisted on remaining in the same room, leading to a heated exchange. When Kulsum repeated her request, investigators say the argument escalated into violence.

According to the allegations, Manik Hossain picked up a spade kept inside the house and struck his wife several times on the head, causing severe injuries. He is also accused of hitting her in the chest with the back end of the tool. The injuries proved fatal, and Kulsum died at the scene before any medical assistance could be provided.

The couple’s children were reportedly present inside the house when the attack occurred. Their cries alerted neighbours, who rushed to the scene, restrained the accused and immediately informed the police. Officers later arrived, recovered the body and took Manik Hossain into custody.

The victim’s eldest son, Al-Amin, alleged that he witnessed his father killing his mother. Speaking after the incident, he demanded exemplary punishment, saying the family wanted justice for his mother’s death and the maximum legal penalty for the accused.

Following the incident, the victim’s mother, Meherun Nesa, lodged a murder case against Manik Hossain with Phulbari Police Station. Family members maintain that years of marital discord and financial difficulties ultimately culminated in the fatal attack.

Officer-in-Charge Abdul Latif Shah of Phulbari Police Station confirmed that the suspect was detained at the scene. He said an inquest report had been completed before the body was sent to the morgue at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the killing.

Law enforcement officials stated that the investigation will proceed based on forensic findings, evidence collected from the scene and statements from eyewitnesses. Further legal action will be taken in accordance with the outcome of the investigation.

The incident has deeply unsettled local residents, many of whom described it as a tragic reminder of the dangers posed by unresolved domestic conflict. Community members said that persistent marital disputes, financial pressure and family disagreements should never escalate into violence. They stressed the need for stronger family awareness, greater community support for vulnerable households and effective enforcement of the law to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities have urged the public to allow the legal process to take its course while all available evidence is examined.
