McCullum Leaves England’s Test Coaching Role

Brendon McCullum is set to step down as England’s Test head coach after a sustained period of disappointing results prompted the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to make a significant change to the team’s leadership. The former New Zealand captain will, however, remain in charge of England’s white-ball sides for the time being.

ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould said the decision followed an extended run of underwhelming performances in Test cricket. He acknowledged that the team’s recent results had made it increasingly difficult to justify retaining McCullum in charge of the red-ball side, despite the positive impact he made earlier in his tenure.

McCullum’s appointment in 2022 marked the beginning of a bold new era for England’s Test team. Working alongside captain Ben Stokes, he introduced an aggressive and fearless style of cricket that quickly became known for its attacking intent, positive mindset and willingness to chase victories rather than settle for draws. The approach transformed England’s fortunes in its early stages and earned widespread admiration across the cricketing world.

Under the Stokes-McCullum partnership, England secured memorable 3-0 series victories over both New Zealand and Pakistan. During the historic tour of Pakistan, England produced one of the most remarkable batting displays in modern Test cricket by scoring more than 500 runs in a single day, reinforcing the team’s commitment to attacking cricket regardless of conditions.

England also received considerable praise during the fiercely contested 2023 Ashes series at home against Australia. Although the five-match contest ended in a 2-2 draw, England’s adventurous brand of cricket won widespread acclaim for its entertainment value and competitive spirit.

The momentum, however, gradually faded. England struggled to reproduce the same success against stronger opposition and in more demanding overseas conditions. Heavy 4-1 series defeats in India and Australia exposed weaknesses in the team’s tactical flexibility, with critics arguing that the aggressive philosophy was not always suited to different pitches and match situations.

The decline became even more evident over the past year. England lost seven of their last nine Test matches, including a comprehensive 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia during the 2025-26 season. That disappointment was followed by a 2-1 home series defeat against New Zealand, further increasing pressure on the coaching staff and the leadership group.

Off-field issues also contributed to the growing scrutiny surrounding the Test side. Concerns emerged over the team’s drinking culture, while disciplinary matters attracted significant public attention during the New Zealand series. Former captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were left out of the second Test after reportedly breaking the team’s curfew by visiting a London bar late at night. The incident fuelled criticism that standards within the squad had slipped and raised fresh questions about discipline and accountability.

In an ECB statement, McCullum described coaching England’s Test side as an extraordinary experience. He said he was immensely proud of what the team had achieved during his tenure and of the memories created with the players and support staff. While admitting he was disappointed to leave the role, he added that he respected the board’s decision and wished the Test side every success in the future.

McCullum’s final match as England’s Test coach came in the concluding Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. The fixture also marked the end of an era as long-serving captain Ben Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing two defining chapters in England’s recent Test history to a close on the same occasion.

England are now preparing for another period of transition. With an important home Test series against Pakistan approaching, the ECB is expected to appoint both a new Test head coach and a new captain. Following a sequence of disappointing results, the board hopes the leadership overhaul will help rebuild the side, restore consistency and place England back among the leading Test nations.
