Dutch Referee Dies After World Cup Omission

Dutch football referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38, bringing a tragic end to a career that had recently been overshadowed by controversy. Dieperink had initially been selected by FIFA to serve as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, but his name was removed from the final list two months ago while a police investigation was still under way.

Dieperink’s omission from the World Cup followed an investigation that began in April, when he was arrested by the Metropolitan Police in the United States after a teenager accused him of sexual misconduct.
