World Cup Row Ends in Tragic Death of Young Man

A young man in Noakhali’s Senbagh upazila has died by suicide following an alleged argument with his wife after he returned home late from watching the 2026 FIFA World Cup final match.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Alauddin Raihan, 27, a resident of Maijja Mia’s house in Kesharpar (Khajuria) village under Ward No. 8 of Kesharpar Union in Senbagh. The incident took place in the early hours of Monday, leaving his family and local residents deeply shocked.

Raihan was the son of Kuwait expatriate Abdul Barek. He had also worked in Saudi Arabia before returning to Bangladesh about a year ago. He got married around five to six months ago and had been living with his wife, Marjan Akter Momotaz, 18.

According to local residents, Raihan went to Kankirhat market on Sunday night to watch the much-anticipated World Cup final between Argentina and Spain with his friends. After the match ended, he returned home in the early hours of the morning.

Family members said an argument broke out between Raihan and his wife over his decision to watch the match outside and his late return home. The disagreement reportedly escalated into a heated exchange. At one stage, his wife became upset and said she would leave for her parents’ house before walking out of the room.

Relatives said Raihan threatened to take his own life during the argument. Later, when family members were unaware, he allegedly went inside his room and hanged himself from the ceiling fan.

After some time, his wife returned and found him hanging. Her cries alerted other members of the family, who rushed to the scene. They later informed local representatives and the police about the incident.

Local ward member Ibrahim Khalil Chowdhury said he was informed by relatives at around 7:30am. After arriving at the house, he found Raihan dead and immediately notified the police.

Senbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Rahim Sarker said police recovered the body from the scene after receiving information about the incident. The body was sent to the mortuary of Noakhali 250-bed General Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The police official said necessary legal procedures were being followed. Investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death, including the events that took place before the incident. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the completion of the investigation and the post-mortem report.

The incident has cast a shadow of grief over Kesharpar village, where neighbours and relatives expressed shock over the sudden death of the young man. Local residents said such tragic incidents highlight the need for greater attention to emotional distress and conflict resolution within families.
