Two Cousins Drown in Pond in Magura’s Mohammadpur

Two young cousins drowned in a pond in Magsura’s Mohammadpur upazila on Tuesday morning, leaving their families and the local community in deep mourning.

The incident occurred in Mousha village of the upazila on 21 July. The deceased were identified as Raisa, aged two, daughter of Aminur Rahman, and Rafia, aged three, daughter of Alinur Rahman. The two girls were cousins and lived in the same village.

According to local residents, the two children went outside their homes to play in the morning. As they were both very young, family members were keeping an eye on them. At some point, however, the children reportedly moved out of the family’s immediate sight.

When relatives noticed that the two girls were missing, they began searching for them. The initial search focused on areas around the homes, while neighbours also joined the effort. After some time, family members went towards a pond beside the house and reportedly found the two children floating in the water.

Relatives immediately pulled the children from the pond and tried to rescue them. They were then rushed to Mohammadpur Upazila Health Complex in the hope of saving their lives. However, after examining the children, the duty doctor declared both of them dead.

News of the deaths quickly spread through Mousha village, casting a pall of grief over the area. The children’s relatives were left devastated by the sudden tragedy, while neighbours gathered to offer support to the bereaved families.

Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shamim Ahmed said the police had been informed about the deaths by the hospital authorities. Following the report, police were sent to the scene. Based on the preliminary information available, the two children appeared to have died after drowning in the pond.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the risks posed by open water bodies around residential areas, particularly for very young children. Ponds, ditches and other bodies of water are common in many rural communities, and children can reach them quickly when they are playing outdoors or are briefly left without direct supervision.

At the age of two and three, children generally have limited awareness of water-related dangers and may be unable to rescue themselves if they fall into a pond. For families living near water bodies, safety measures such as restricting unsupervised outdoor play, keeping children within sight and creating barriers around hazardous areas can help reduce the risk of similar incidents.

The deaths of Raisa and Rafia have brought immense sorrow to their families. Their untimely deaths have also deeply affected residents of Mousha, with the loss of two very young lives leaving the village in mourning.
