Fifteen Factory Workers Injured as Bus Overturns in Kaliakair

At least fifteen garment factory workers, including several women, sustained injuries on Monday morning after a staff transport bus lost control and overturned on the Maona-Kaliakair regional highway in Gazipur’s Kaliakair upazila.

The accident took place at approximately 8:30 am in the Kutubdia area. The bus, operated on behalf of GMS Textiles, was making its usual morning rounds, picking up employees from various designated stops and carrying them towards the manufacturing plant. As the vehicle reached Kutubdia, the driver suddenly lost control, causing the bus to veer off the road and flip over onto its side.

The sudden crash triggered panic among the passengers inside. Hearing the impact, local residents rushed to the scene to assist, breaking through to extract trapped workers from the overturned wreckage. The injured were transported to the Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex for immediate medical care. While most were treated for minor cuts and blunt force trauma, medical staff transferred several workers with more severe injuries to specialized facilities for advanced treatment.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities are examining whether high speed, driver fatigue, mechanical failure, or poor road surface conditions contributed to the vehicle swerving off the carriageway.

Officer-in-Charge of Kaliakair Police Station confirmed the incident, stating that a police team was dispatched to the location shortly after receiving reports of the crash. Officers inspected the site, assisted with clearing the thoroughfare to restore traffic flow, and confirmed that formal legal steps regarding the incident are being taken.

Kaliakair is one of Gazipur’s densest industrial belts, home to hundreds of ready-made garment factories where tens of thousands of workers rely daily on private buses, minibuses, and hired transport to reach their shifts. Morning and evening rush hours regularly see heavy commuter traffic along connecting routes like the Maona-Kaliakair highway. Although this accident yielded no fatalities, the injury of fifteen workers highlights ongoing safety concerns surrounding the roadworthiness, vehicle fitness, and driving standards of factory-contracted transport in the region.
