Five Held in Karwan Bazar Over Alleged Robbery Preparations

Five men have been arrested in the capital’s Karwan Bazar area while allegedly preparing to carry out a robbery, according to the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Rayhan, 20; Md Nur Alam, 25; Md Hridoy, 26; Md Mehedi Hasan, 38; and Md Jewel, 30.

The arrests were made at around midnight on Tuesday (21 July) during an operation in the Karwan Bazar area under Tejgaon police station.

According to CTTC sources, a team from the unit’s Transnational Crime Division received confidential information that a group of suspected criminals was preparing to carry out a robbery in the Karwan Bazar area. Acting on the information, members of the law enforcement agency conducted an operation in the area and arrested the five suspects.

The arrests took place before the alleged robbery could be carried out, according to the authorities. The suspects were subsequently sent to court for further legal proceedings.

Karwan Bazar is one of Dhaka’s busiest commercial and transport hubs, with activity continuing late into the night. The area attracts traders, workers, transport operators and members of the public, making security and crime prevention a significant concern for law enforcement agencies. Police and other security units regularly conduct patrols and intelligence-led operations in busy parts of the capital to prevent crimes such as robbery and mugging.

The latest arrests followed intelligence gathering rather than a reported robbery in progress. Authorities have not, however, provided further details about whether the suspects had previously been involved in similar offences or whether any weapons or other items were recovered during the operation.

The case will now proceed through the legal process. The allegations against the arrested individuals will be examined as part of the investigation and subsequent court proceedings, while their guilt or innocence will ultimately be determined through due legal process.

The CTTC has said that operations based on confidential information will continue as part of broader efforts to prevent criminal activity in Dhaka. The arrest of the five suspects, officials said, demonstrates the role of intelligence-led policing in identifying suspected criminal activity before an offence is allegedly committed.
