Police in Chittagong have arrested Aftab Mazumder Joy, a prominent member of the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) city convenor committee, following serious allegations of sexual assault and deceit under the pretext of marriage.
The arrest was confirmed on Wednesday by Sabuj Rahman, Inspector (Investigation) at Chandgaon Police Station. According to law enforcement officials, the suspect was taken into custody shortly after a formal complaint was lodged, with legal proceedings now under way.
The formal First Information Report (FIR) reveals that the acquaintance between Joy and the complainant began on Facebook. Over time, a romantic relationship blossomed, largely driven by the suspect’s repeated promises of marriage.
The situation culminated on the night of 14 July, when Joy allegedly lured the young woman to Room 208 of the ‘Sweet Palace’ hotel, situated within the Chandgaon police precinct. Relying on his assurances of a future together, the victim entered into a physical relationship with him.
Tensions escalated shortly after the encounter when the victim pressed Joy to honour his commitment to marry her. The suspect refused the proposal outright and severed all communication. Subsequent inquiries by the victim revealed that Joy was already married—a fact he had deliberately concealed throughout their relationship.
Following these revelations, the victim approached the authorities and filed a formal case at Chandgaon Police Station on 19 July. The charges brought against the suspect fall under two distinct statutory frameworks:
Section 493 of the Penal Code: Addressing deceitful cohabitation induced by a man deceitfully causing a woman to believe that they are lawfully married.
Section 9(1) of the Nari O Shishu Nirjonaton Daman Ain, 2000 (Amended): Pertaining to rape under the Prevention of Oppression Against Women and Children Act.
Speaking on the progress of the case, Inspector Sabuj Rahman stated that the investigation remains active. “Aftab Mazumder Joy was apprehended based on the specific allegations made by the complainant,” Rahman said. He added that further legal steps would be determined by the findings of the ongoing probe and the evidence gathered.
Police sources confirmed that the accused has been produced before the local court as law enforcement agencies proceed with formal judicial measures.
