The incident occurred on Friday evening within the Subujbagh area of Gharisar union. According to local residents and family members, the accused siblings—identified as Sohan Bepari and Imran Bepari, sons of local resident Nasir Bepari—had long struggled with severe substance abuse and gambling addictions. Rather than seeking legitimate livelihoods, the pair frequently pressured their elderly parents for money, resorting to domestic abuse, physical assaults, and property vandalism whenever their monetary demands were refused.

Family accounts reveal a grim pattern of financial exploitation and coercion. Just weeks prior, their father had taken out a loan worth thirty thousand taka in instalments to satisfy the brothers’ relentless demands. Instead of utilizing the funds constructively, the siblings squandered the entire amount on gambling dens and drug dens, leaving their elderly father to bear the heavy burden of repaying the loan through immense personal hardship.

The situation reached a boiling point on Friday when the brothers cornered their father and demanded an immediate cash payout of fifty thousand taka acquired through microcredit instalments. They accompanied the demand with explicit threats to burn down the dwelling if they left empty-handed. When the parents firmly refused to comply with the extortion, the suspects carried out their threat by igniting a fire inside their living quarters.

Flames rapidly engulfed the structure, prompting terrified neighbours to sound the alarm and alert local emergency services. A firefighting unit from the Naria Fire Service station rushed to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control. Unfortunately, their swift intervention came too late to save the building, as the interior and structure were completely reduced to ashes.

Al-Amin, the elder brother of the accused, expressed profound despair over the recurring abuse. He detailed how the siblings routinely subjected their parents to violence over monetary disputes and implored local authorities to intervene and restore safety to the household. Following the arson attack, both Sohan and Imran fled the neighbourhood and remain at large.

Local administrative authorities have taken cognisance of the tragedy. Naria Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Abdul Kaiyum Khan confirmed that officials are thoroughly investigating the matter, describing the act as an extremely distressing consequence of substance addiction. He assured the public that the local administration maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics and will take strict legal measures against those responsible.
