A new video involving Gazi Nazrul Islam, the Satkhira-4 constituency lawmaker recently expelled from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has surfaced on social media, triggering renewed discussion and criticism. The footage appears to show the MP in close interaction with a woman at different parts of a hotel, including its lobby, corridors and other areas.
The identity of the woman has not been independently verified. It also remains unclear whether she is Mariam Akter (Begum), whom Gazi Nazrul has identified as his second wife in a previous written statement.
The latest video began circulating on social media on Thursday (23 July). In the footage, Gazi Nazrul is seen entering a hotel accompanied by a woman. At the reception desk, he appears to shake hands with a member of staff before proceeding further inside with her.
Other sequences show the lawmaker in close interaction with the woman in the hotel lobby. The two are also seen together in a corridor and near a stairwell. However, the authenticity of the footage, the exact date on which it was recorded and the circumstances surrounding the scenes could not be independently established.
The video’s circulation has brought the MP back into the spotlight at a time when he is already facing intense public scrutiny. Questions have also emerged on social media over the identity of the woman seen accompanying him. No official statement has been issued confirming that she is Mariam Akter.
The latest development follows another video that circulated on social media on Monday night (20 July), with claims that Gazi Nazrul was seen in an intimate situation with a woman. The footage generated considerable discussion online and prompted the lawmaker to issue a written statement explaining his position.
In that statement, Gazi Nazrul claimed that the woman seen with him in the hotel room was his second wife. He said that on 13 July, he had visited the business office of his second wife’s father, Mohammad Masum Billah, in Moghbazar, Dhaka. According to his account, he went there with his first wife, Mosammat Maksuda Begum, his second wife Mariam Akter and his driver Obaidullah. He said they remained at the office for around an hour and 15 minutes.
The controversy has unfolded alongside significant political developments concerning the lawmaker. On Wednesday (22 July), a meeting of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Central Executive Council, chaired by the party’s Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman, was held at the Leader of the Opposition’s official residence on Minto Road in the capital.
Following the meeting, the party announced its decision to expel Gazi Nazrul Islam from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. According to the party, an organisational investigation had substantiated allegations of moral misconduct against him, leading to the disciplinary action.
With the latest video now circulating, scrutiny surrounding the former Jamaat lawmaker has intensified once again. Yet, several key details remain unverified, including the identity of the woman shown in the footage and the circumstances in which the video was recorded. In the absence of independent verification or an official statement from the relevant parties, those details cannot be conclusively established.
