A 35-year-old man, identified as Shariful Islam Jitu, who was facing eight criminal cases, was hacked to death in Jashore, with police detaining one person in connection with the incident.
Jitu, son of Sirajul Islam of the Mollapara area in Barandipara, Jashore city, was attacked at around 11pm on Wednesday, 22 July, near Phultala intersection in the Barandipara area. The attackers reportedly left him seriously injured at the scene before fleeing.
Local residents alerted the emergency services by calling 999 after finding Jitu lying in a pool of blood. Police from Kotwali Police Station subsequently reached the spot, rescued him and took him to Jashore 250-bed General Hospital for treatment.
Doctors said Jitu was in a critical condition when he arrived at the hospital at around midnight. Dr Kazi Masum Reza, a physician in the hospital’s emergency department, said the victim received initial treatment but his condition deteriorated rapidly. Given the severity of his injuries, doctors referred him to Dhaka for advanced medical care.
Jitu was being transported to Dhaka when his condition worsened. He died after the ambulance reached Narail in the early hours of Thursday. His body was later brought back to the hospital at around 3am and placed in the morgue for further procedures.
The killing has prompted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack. Police said Jitu was a known figure in the local criminal underworld and had eight cases registered against him at the police station. Investigators are examining whether the killing was linked to an earlier dispute or longstanding enmity.
Jashore’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations), Mirajul Islam, said the initial assessment suggested that the attack might have stemmed from previous hostility. Several police teams have been deployed to identify and arrest those allegedly involved in the killing, he said.
Police have detained a man named Sumon Mia in connection with the incident. According to the authorities, Sumon has alleged that Jitu was attacked after allegedly attempting to rape his wife. Police are investigating the allegation to establish whether it was the immediate motive behind the attack.
The allegation has yet to be independently verified, and investigators are expected to examine the statements of those involved, evidence from the crime scene and other relevant information before reaching a conclusion.
Police have not yet disclosed whether the detained man has been formally charged or whether any other suspects have been identified. The investigation remains ongoing, while the authorities continue efforts to determine exactly how the fatal attack unfolded and who was responsible.
