A local political leader was killed in a fatal road accident in Mirsarai, Chittagong, on Thursday, 23 July. The victim, identified as 36-year-old Md Salahuddin, lost his life on the spot following a collision on the Special Economic Zone Road in the Muslim Chhattar area, formerly known as Ismail Khan Chhattar.
Salahuddin was the son of the late Mohiuddin, hailing from the Mollapara area of Saherkhali Union within Mirsarai Upazila. He served as the Joint Convenor of the Saherkhali Union Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
According to eyewitnesses and local police sources, Salahuddin was returning home on his motorbike from the Baratakia market. Upon reaching the Muslim Chhattar intersection along the economic zone corridor, his motorcycle was caught in a collision involving an oil tanker belonging to Seven Rings Cement and a double-cabin pickup van operated by Chittagong Online Limited. The impact of the crash left Salahuddin with fatal injuries, causing him to die at the scene before medical help could arrive.
Upon receiving news of the incident, officers from Mirsarai Police Station arrived promptly at the location to recover the body. Police seized all three vehicles involved in the collision—the motorcycle, the oil tanker, and the internet provider’s pickup truck—and brought them under police custody.
News of the tragic death triggered widespread grief across the local community and amongst political colleagues. Mirsarai Upazila Jubo Dal coordinators Harun Or Rashid and SM Sumon expressed deep condolences over his passing, describing Salahuddin as a dedicated and active organizer for the party in the Saherkhali Union.
Confirming the details of the accident, Farida Yasmin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirsarai Police Station, stated that police swiftly dispatched a team to retrieve the deceased’s body after being alerted to the crash on the economic zone road. She added that all vehicles involved are currently held at the station, and necessary legal procedures are underway to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
