Police Refuse Case After Abducted Schoolgirl Found Unconscious in Ranisankail

Police in Ranisankail, Thakurgaon, are facing serious allegations of negligence after refusing to register a formal complaint regarding the abduction and harassment of a ninth-grade schoolgirl.

The victim’s family claims officers at the local police station continually stalled progress when presented with a written complaint, ultimately directing them to take the matter to court instead. Desperate for justice, the family has now lodged an official grievance with the Thakurgaon Superintendent of Police (SP).

Abducted Near Home and Found Unconscious

According to the written complaint and family sources, the incident occurred on the night of 1 July in Jawgaon village, located within the Nanduar Union of Ranisankail Upazila. The victim is the ninth-grade daughter of Milan Islam, a expatriate worker currently residing in Egypt.

The teenager had stepped outside her house late that evening to use the sanitary facilities near the dwelling. Three local youths had allegedly been waiting in ambush. The assailants forcibly covered her mouth, administered an intoxicating substance to render her unconscious, and dragged her away.

When the girl failed to return, her family and neighbours launched an urgent search across the surrounding area. They eventually discovered the teenager lying unconscious behind the toilet block near her house. She was rushed to the Ranisankail Upazila Health Complex for emergency medical attention. Once she regained consciousness, the girl recounted the nightmarish ordeal to her relatives.

Months of Stalking and Unheeded Warnings

The victim’s mother, Rani Akhtar, revealed that three local boys had been relentlessly harassing her daughter on her daily walk to and from school for months. The youths frequently made indecent comments, made unsolicited romantic proposals, and subjected her to persistent intimidation.

Despite the family raising these concerns with the suspects’ parents, no corrective measures were taken. The three accused have been named as:

• Pavel (16): Son of Abdul Aziz

• Badal alias Upasu (17): Son of Sahadat

• Rimon Ali (15): Son of Shahjahan

All three suspects reside in the same village. Efforts to contact the trio for comment following the incident proved unsuccessful.

Allegations of Political Interference at the Police Station

Rani Akhtar submitted a formal written statement (ejahar) naming the three teenagers at Ranisankail Police Station shortly after the assault. Although station officials initially promised swift action, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) repeatedly delayed filing the First Information Report (FIR). Family members were sent away under various pretexts and were eventually told to pursue the case in court or seek an informal local mediation.

The family alleges that police inaction stems directly from political influence exerted by Jamirul Islam, President of the Nanduar Union BNP unit and a former Union Parishad Chairman. Local residents suggest the accused youths operate under his protection, deterring officers from intervening.

Rani Akhtar, the Victim’s Mother: “My daughter was stalked and harassed for months. When we went to the station after the attack, the OC initially assured us he would act. Then he kept us hanging around for days and refused to record the case. Instead, he advised us to settle it locally. We had no option left but to petition the Superintendent of Police.”

Following the submission to the SP’s office, senior police officials visited the crime scene to inspect the surroundings and record initial statements.

Official Responses and Denials

When pressed by journalists regarding the decision to reject the case, the Officer-in-Charge of Ranisankail Police Station, Amanullah Al Bari, offered a brief justification. He stated that the incident appeared “fabricated” during initial inquiries, which led to the refusal to log the complaint.

Meanwhile, the local political figure rejected all assertions of misconduct. Jamirul Islam asserted that his name had been dragged into the dispute without cause.

Higher authorities within the district police administration have since stepped in to evaluate the situation. Thakurgaon Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance), Mohammad Khodadad Hossain, confirmed that a formal investigation is underway.

He assured that the written grievance received from the family is being scrutinized impartially. Should the investigation yield evidence supporting the family’s account, necessary legal proceedings will be initiated against both the alleged perpetrators and any officers found derelict in their duties.
