India Tour of Bangladesh Under Discussion for Proposed September Window

India Tour of Bangladesh Under Discussion for Proposed September Window

High-level discussions between national cricket boards could see India undertake a white-ball tour of Bangladesh this September, a move that is likely to force the rescheduling of India’s planned Twenty20 International series against Afghanistan.

Negotiations between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have accelerated rapidly over recent days. Under the proposed itinerary, the Indian national squad would travel to Bangladesh for a six-match white-ball campaign. The draft schedule places three One Day Internationals (ODIs) on 1, 3, and 6 September, followed immediately by three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) slated for 9, 12, and 13 September.

Direct Scheduling Conflict and Logistical Clashes

The proposed fixtures create an immediate logistical bottleneck for Indian cricket administrators. Prior to these developments, the BCCI had scheduled a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, with matches booked for 13, 15, and 17 September.

With the final T20I in Bangladesh taking place on 13 September, fulfilling both commitments simultaneously on their original dates is virtually impossible. Consequently, discussions are underway between the BCCI and the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) to push back the Delhi fixtures by several days to allow sufficient recovery and travel time following the tour in Bangladesh.

Historic Context and Neutral Venue Hosting

The upcoming bilateral encounter with Afghanistan holds distinct historical significance. Due to persistent security and political instability at home, Afghanistan have relied on neutral venues across India—including Dehradun, Lucknow, and Greater Noida—to host their home series for several years.

However, this series was designated as the first instance where Afghanistan would officially play as the “home” host team against India on Indian soil. The ACB had arranged with the Delhi and District Cricket Association to utilise the capital’s venue as their primary base. Although the clash of dates has cast brief uncertainty over the exact start date, Afghan cricket officials have confirmed that the series remains firmly on the calendar.

Diplomatic Thaw and Broadening Bilateral Calendars

The renewed momentum behind India’s tour of Bangladesh reflects a wider diplomaticThaw across the region. Bilateral cricket relations had faced disruption following political upheaval in Dhaka during 2024, leading to the postponement of the original 2025 tour schedule. Recent diplomatic engagements and administrative talks at International Cricket Council meetings have paved the way for resuming full sporting ties.

While India’s deep talent pool theoretically allows them to field two separate national squads at once, administrators from all three nations are working towards a sequential schedule. Final confirmation of the tour itinerary is expected once broadcasting rights and official clearances are finalised by both host boards.
