Messi Makes First Public Appearance Since World Cup Final

Lionel Messi has made his first public appearance since Argentina’s heartbreaking defeat by Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, briefly stepping out to watch a local football match near his hometown of Rosario.

Messi is currently spending time with his family in the Rosario area following the conclusion of the World Cup. During a break from his private holiday, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner attended a Primera C league fixture at the Antonio Di Giacomo Stadium in Arroyo Seco on Saturday.

The match featured Leones FC, a club run by Messi’s family, against Central Córdoba. The stadium is located close to Rosario, where the Argentina captain has strong personal and footballing ties.

Messi arrived after the match had already begun, wearing a black hoodie in an apparent attempt to keep a low profile. His efforts did not go unnoticed for long, however. Supporters quickly recognised the global football icon, while television cameras and spectators’ mobile phones captured images of him watching the game from a balcony behind one of the goals.

The sight of Messi immediately created excitement among those inside the ground. The 39-year-old forward smiled and waved to the crowd as supporters greeted him warmly. Children and fans repeatedly chanted his name, while applause spread through the stadium as they welcomed one of the most celebrated footballers in the history of the sport.

The occasion, however, did not bring much joy for the home side. Leones FC were beaten 2-0 by Central Córdoba, leaving Messi’s family club fourth in Zone B with 29 points. They are now seven points behind leaders Cañuelas, who have 36 points.

Messi’s appearance came shortly after an emotionally demanding World Cup campaign. Argentina reached the final but suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Spain, finishing as runners-up. The result brought an end to their hopes of lifting the trophy, while Messi and his team-mates faced the disappointment of falling at the final hurdle.

Most members of Lionel Scaloni’s squad returned to Buenos Aires, where they were given a hero’s welcome by thousands of supporters. Messi, however, chose to return directly to Rosario rather than join the celebrations in the capital. He has since been spending his time with his family in the nearby city of Funes.

His brief appearance at the match was therefore significant, as it marked the first time he had been seen publicly since the World Cup final. For local supporters, the unexpected visit offered a rare opportunity to see the football legend in a more relaxed and personal setting, away from the intensity of international football.

There is still no confirmed date for Messi’s return to competitive club football. Guillermo Hoyos, the club’s head coach, recently indicated that no specific date had been set for the veteran forward’s comeback.

For now, Messi appears to be enjoying a period of rest with his family after another demanding international campaign. His surprise visit to a match involving his family’s club may have lasted only a short time, but it provided local fans with a memorable moment and once again underlined the extraordinary level of affection he continues to receive in his native region.
