Miura Scores at 59, Extends Football Legacy

Age, once again, proved no barrier for Kazuyoshi Miura as the Japanese icon etched his name deeper into football history by scoring at 59. The veteran forward found the net in an official match for the first time in nearly four years, underlining a career defined by extraordinary longevity and persistence.

Miura’s landmark moment came during the Fukushima Prefecture qualifying final, where Fukushima United produced a commanding 7–0 victory over Iwaki Furukawa to secure a place in the main draw of this season’s Emperor’s Cup. At the time of the goal, Miura was 59 years and 194 days old, further strengthening his status as the world’s oldest active professional footballer to score in competitive play.

His previous official goal had come on 12 November 2022 while representing Suzuka Club in the Japan Football League. Since then, appearances have been limited, making this latest achievement particularly significant. It also marked his first goal for Fukushima United since joining the club.

Deployed as captain, Miura featured for more than 50 minutes—his longest outing since his arrival. The decisive moment arrived seven minutes into the second half, with Fukushima already leading 4–0. A surging solo run from 23-year-old winger Takatora Einaga set the stage. Beating three defenders on the right flank, Einaga delivered a precise low cut-back into the penalty area. Miura, reading the play with trademark intelligence, slipped behind the defensive line and finished first-time with his right foot, guiding the ball into the net.

The goal triggered an emotional response. Miura embraced his young teammate before raising a finger towards the sky, a familiar celebration that has accompanied many of his career milestones. Teammates quickly gathered around him, acknowledging both the moment and the man. Though it was Fukushima’s fifth goal of the match, it became the defining highlight of the encounter.

Miura’s professional journey began in 1986, and remarkably, he has remained active across five decades. His career has spanned multiple continents and generations of footballers, earning him global recognition not only for his skill but for his resilience and dedication to the sport.

Fukushima United’s victory ensures their participation in the Emperor’s Cup main stage, set to begin on 19 August. For Miura, who will celebrate his 60th birthday next February, the goal serves as another reminder that his passion for the game remains undiminished. Even as time advances, his pursuit of moments like these continues to defy expectation.
