Police have arrested two local political leaders in Narsingdi’s Shibpur under the Anti-Terrorism Act, according to police.
The two men were identified as Shahadat Hossain Shyamol Molla, 45, and Md Sharif Khan, 35. Molla is the office secretary of the Shibpur municipal unit of the Awami League and a resident of Ashrafpur village. He is the son of the late Salauddin.
Police arrested Molla from the Ashrafpur area of Shibpur municipality late on Sunday night, 26 July. The arrest was made under provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act, although the specific allegations against him were not detailed in the information available.
The second detainee, Sharif Khan, was arrested from his home in Madhyapara village of Dulalpur Union on the same night. He is the president of the Dulalpur Union unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and the son of Anwar Hossain Khan of Madhyapara village.
The arrests took place amid heightened political and legal scrutiny of members and leaders associated with the Awami League and its affiliated organisations. However, an arrest does not by itself establish guilt, and the allegations against the two men will be subject to due legal process.
Shibpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Kohinur Mia confirmed the arrests. He said the two accused were produced before a court on Monday following their arrest.
Police have not provided further details about the cases or the specific allegations that led to the arrests. The next steps in the legal proceedings will depend on the court’s consideration of the cases and the evidence presented by the authorities.
