Motorcycle Air Filter Conceals 1,955 Yaba Tablets in Sonargaon

Two men were arrested after 1,955 yaba tablets were allegedly found concealed inside the air filter box of a motorcycle during an operation by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-11) in Sonargaon, Narayanganj. The motorcycle, which the authorities said was being used to transport the drugs, was also seized.

According to RAB, the two detainees are suspected members of an organised drug trafficking network. Investigators believe they had been collecting yaba from border areas for an extended period before transporting and supplying it to Narayanganj, Dhaka and neighbouring areas.

The operation was conducted at around 1.10am on Saturday, 1 August, in the Mogorapara Bus Stand area of Sonargaon Upazila. Acting on confidential information, a team of RAB-11 officers reportedly learned that suspected drug dealers were gathering in the area with yaba allegedly intended for sale.

RAB personnel moved to the location and reportedly noticed two men attempting to flee on a motorcycle after spotting the law enforcement team. The officers subsequently intercepted and detained them.

A search of the motorcycle initially failed to reveal anything significant. RAB personnel then conducted a more thorough inspection of different parts of the vehicle, prompted by their suspicions. During the search, they discovered that the air filter box had allegedly been used as a concealed compartment. A total of 1,955 yaba tablets were recovered from inside the box.

The arrested men were identified as Abul Kalam Azad, 36, son of Babul Mia of Panchaura village in Burichang Upazila of Cumilla, and Sobuj, 29, son of Harun-or-Rashid of Anandapur village in Brahmanpara Upazila of the same district.

RAB said drug traffickers often adopt unconventional methods to evade detection while transporting narcotics. In this case, the suspected traffickers allegedly used the motorcycle’s air filter box to hide the yaba. As the compartment is part of the vehicle’s internal structure, such concealment could potentially make the drugs difficult to identify during a routine visual search.

Captain Rawnak Erfan Khan, operation officer of RAB-11, said preliminary inquiries and questioning of the arrested men indicated that they were allegedly active members of an organised drug trafficking network. According to information obtained during the initial investigation, they had reportedly been procuring yaba in sizeable consignments from border areas and transporting it to different locations while attempting to avoid law enforcement surveillance.

The drugs were allegedly destined for distribution and sale in Narayanganj, Dhaka and surrounding districts, he said. Investigators are now examining the wider network and attempting to establish the source of the consignment and identify others who may have been involved in the alleged trafficking operation.

The motorcycle used in the suspected transportation of the narcotics was seized, while the recovered yaba and vehicle were taken into custody as part of the subsequent legal process.

RAB said a case had been filed against the two arrested men with Sonargaon Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act. Legal proceedings are now under way.

The seizure comes amid continuing efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb the movement of yaba and other narcotics across Bangladesh. Authorities have repeatedly focused on routes linking border regions with major urban centres, where drugs are allegedly transported for distribution. The use of concealed compartments in vehicles also remains a challenge for enforcement agencies, requiring detailed searches based on intelligence and specific suspicion.

In the Sonargaon operation, RAB said confidential intelligence enabled its personnel to act swiftly and intercept the suspected traffickers before the alleged consignment could be distributed. The investigation is continuing to determine the full extent of the network and the intended destination of the seized drugs.
