Two Dhaka Metro Stations Shut Over Suspicious Bags

Two key stations on Dhaka’s metro rail network, Mirpur-10 and Farmgate, were temporarily closed on Saturday after separate suspicious bags and sacks were found at the stations, prompting a security response from police and bomb disposal personnel.

The two incidents were reported at roughly the same time, leading the authorities to take precautionary measures and restrict station operations while the objects were examined. Police were deployed at both locations, while the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s bomb disposal unit was called in to assess whether either item posed a potential security threat.

According to police and officials familiar with the incidents, a suspicious bag was spotted at around noon on the second floor of Mirpur-10 Metro Rail Station. Station personnel noticed the unattended bag and promptly informed the authorities. Police subsequently arrived at the station, strengthened security arrangements and cordoned off the area around the object.

Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Model Police Station, said police were notified after the bag was discovered on the second floor. The area was secured as a precaution, while a team from the DMP bomb disposal unit arrived to inspect the bag and determine its contents.

Police said it would not be possible to confirm what was inside the bag until the specialist team completed its examination. The authorities are checking whether the object contains any explosive, hazardous or otherwise dangerous material. Until the assessment is completed, the area is being treated as a potential security risk.

A separate incident was reported at Farmgate Metro Rail Station, where a suspicious sack was found beside a pillar on the ground floor. After the sack was discovered, security measures were introduced and police were informed. The location was also placed under close observation as the authorities prepared to examine the object.

Ibn-e-Mizan, deputy commissioner of the Tejgaon Division, said a suspicious sack had been found beside a pillar beneath the Farmgate Metro Rail Station. The bomb disposal unit was notified so that the object could be examined and the nature of its contents established.

The simultaneous discovery of suspicious objects at two busy metro stations has resulted in heightened security precautions. Mirpur-10 and Farmgate are important points on Dhaka’s metro rail network, serving large numbers of commuters travelling across the capital. Any temporary suspension of services at either station can therefore affect passenger movement, particularly during busy periods.

However, authorities have yet to establish whether the two objects are connected or whether they contain anything dangerous. Until the specialist examination is completed, the discovery of unattended bags should not be treated as evidence of an explosive threat.

Security personnel are maintaining control of the affected areas while the bomb disposal unit carries out its assessment. The authorities are expected to determine the next course of action after the examinations are completed. The metro stations will remain subject to precautionary security measures until the objects are declared safe and the authorities are satisfied that normal operations can resume.

Officials have also urged people not to spread unverified information or rumours surrounding the incidents. In situations involving unattended or suspicious objects, security agencies generally prioritise public safety by restricting access and conducting specialist checks before allowing normal activity to continue.

The final assessment by the bomb disposal unit will establish what was inside the suspicious bag and sack and whether either object posed any actual threat. Until then, the temporary security measures at Mirpur-10 and Farmgate remain in place as a precaution.
