Intact Remains of Husband Discovered in Comilla During Wife’s Burial

In a remarkable occurrence that has captivated the residents of Monohorganj upazila in Comilla, the remains of a man buried nearly a quarter of a century ago were reportedly discovered largely intact during the excavation of a grave for his newly deceased wife. The incident has drawn widespread intrigue and brought hundreds of curious onlookers to the site.

The event took place in the quiet village of Ulupara, situated within the Uttar Howla Union of Monohorganj upazila. The matter came to public attention on Saturday, following the death of the village resident, Ramzan Ali’s wife, on Friday.

The Discovery at the Graveyard

Following the passing of Ramzan Ali’s wife, local grave diggers were tasked with preparing her final resting place directly adjacent to her late husband’s grave. As workers excavated the earth, they encountered the remains of Ramzan Ali, who had passed away approximately 24 years earlier. According to the grave diggers and family members present, the body—wrapped in its original burial shroud (kafan)—appeared astonishingly preserved despite the prolonged passage of time.

News of the discovery spread rapidly across surrounding villages, prompting a large influx of visitors eager to witness the unusual site.

To maintain decorum and ensure religious protocols were respected, local religious leaders stepped in promptly. Hafez Maulana Mahfuzur Rahman, the imam of the Ulupara Jame Mosque, visited the graveyard shortly after being informed of the event.

To preserve the dignity of the deceased, I advised the family and workers to leave the remains undisturbed in their original position and complete the burial of his wife alongside him.”

Local Recollections and Scientific Explanation

Local residents recalled Ramzan Ali as a devout, honest, and highly respected member of the community during his lifetime. He earned his livelihood as a rice and flour trader in the local market and was known for his punctual adherence to the five daily prayers. For many locals, the preservation of his body is viewed through a lens of spiritual reverence.

From a medical and scientific perspective, however, experts note that such phenomena, while rare, can occur under specific environmental conditions. Addressing the occurrence, Dr Reza Mohammad Sarwar Akbar, the Deputy Civil Surgeon of Comilla, explained that the decomposition process is heavily influenced by external factors.

“The rate at which a human body decomposes depends significantly on the surrounding soil environment, moisture levels, depth, oxygen availability, and the presence of specific micro-organisms or bacteria,” Dr Akbar stated. He added that a conclusive scientific determination regarding the body’s state of preservation could only be established through a formal post-mortem examination and soil analysis.

Despite the intense public curiosity, the family proceeded with the funeral rites of Ramzan Ali’s wife in accordance with Islamic tradition, leaving her husband’s grave intact as instructed by the local imam.
