Mehedi Hasan Miraz’s Caribbean Premier League campaign ended on a disappointing note as Guyana Amazon Warriors were knocked out by Jamaica Kingsmen in the second qualifier. Despite posting a formidable 206, Guyana lost by five wickets after Jamaica chased down the target with a strong batting display.
Miraz, who had been one of Guyana’s most effective bowlers in the closing stages of their campaign, endured an unusually difficult outing. He conceded 43 runs from his four overs without taking a wicket, including five sixes.
Guyana won the toss in Bridgetown and elected to bat first. Their innings was built around a superb century from Shimron Hetmyer, who remained unbeaten on 102 from just 45 deliveries. His aggressive knock provided the main impetus, while Shai Hope contributed 40 and Quinton de Kock added a brisk 29 to help Guyana reach 206.
With such a substantial total on the board, Guyana would have expected their bowlers to put Jamaica under sustained pressure. Miraz was introduced as early as the second over, with captain Imran Tahir seemingly looking to exploit the match-up against Jamaica’s two left-handed batters.
The move did not produce the desired result. Maaz Sadaqat immediately attacked Miraz, striking two sixes and a four in his opening over. The Bangladesh all-rounder conceded another six in his second over before returning to the attack in the 12th over and giving up two more maximums.
His final figures read 4-0-43-0.
The performance was a sharp contrast to Miraz’s contribution in the preceding matches. He had taken nine wickets across his previous four games and emerged as one of Guyana’s most reliable bowling options during that stretch. Against Jamaica, however, he could not maintain that momentum as the opposition’s batters consistently found ways to score freely.
Dwayne Pretorius was Guyana’s most successful bowler, taking two wickets for 37 runs. The rest of the attack also struggled to contain Jamaica, with each of the other bowlers conceding at a rate of more than 10 runs per over.
Jamaica’s chase began aggressively. Sadaqat scored 41 from only 17 deliveries, giving the pursuit an immediate boost. Casey Carty then anchored the innings with 56, while Kirk McKenzie added 34 and Saim Ayub contributed 23.
Rovman Powell provided the finishing acceleration with a blistering 40 from just 17 balls. His late assault ensured that Jamaica remained firmly in control as the chase entered its final stages.
The combination of rapid starts, Carty’s substantial contribution and Powell’s late hitting enabled Jamaica to overhaul the 207-run target with five wickets in hand.
For Guyana, the defeat ended their CPL campaign one match before the final. The result was particularly frustrating given the team’s ability to post a total of more than 200, only for their bowling attack to struggle to defend it.
For Miraz, the match brought an otherwise productive CPL campaign to an unhappy conclusion. After playing a significant role with the ball in the preceding matches, he finished his final outing without a wicket and conceded five sixes. Guyana’s elimination means the Bangladesh all-rounder will return from the tournament with a mixed final chapter despite his strong contribution earlier in the competition.
