A 16-year-old student lost his life in Bogura’s Sherpur upazila on Monday evening (3 August) after being physically assaulted while trying to resolve an argument that broke out during a local football match.

The victim, identified as Jamil Sheikh, was a 10th-grade student at the Rural Development Academy (RDA) Laboratory School and College. He was the son of Rafiqul Islam, hailing from the Sherua Dahapara locality within Shahbandegi Union.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, the incident unfolded around 6:30 pm on the grounds of Sherua Adarsha High School, where a recreational football match was being played. During the match, an altercation flared up among the players on the field, escalating into a heated verbal dispute.

Attempting to restore peace, Jamil stepped between the disputing parties to de-escalate the situation. However, a local youth identified as Shakil (22) launched a sudden attack on Jamil, repeatedly kicking and punching him in the chest and head. Jamil collapsed on the pitch from the force of the blows. Bystanders immediately transported the unconscious teenager to the Sherpur Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty doctors confirmed he had died before reaching the facility.

The prime suspect, Shakil—son of Shafiqul Islam from the same village—works as a manager at a local rice processing mill (chatal). He fled the scene immediately after the assault, prompting law enforcement to launch targeted operations to track down his whereabouts.

Confirming the homicide, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sherpur Police Station, S.M. Moinuddin, stated that police officers were dispatched to the scene and the hospital shortly after the incident was reported. He assured that the victim’s body would be released to his family upon completion of an autopsy and related legal formalities, emphasizing that law enforcement is actively conducting drives to apprehend the fugitive suspect.
