A man was detained by local residents in Debhata upazila of Satkhira after he was allegedly found in an objectionable situation inside the home of a married woman. The man, identified as 40-year-old Shariful Islam Morol, was later handed over to police. Local leaders of the Jamaat-e-Islami said he was known in the area as an active supporter of the organisation. Following the filing of a case, police produced him before a court on Tuesday morning, 4 August.
The incident reportedly took place at around 9.30pm on Monday, 3 August, in the northern part of Townshreepur village in Debhata. Shortly after the incident, a video allegedly connected to the episode began circulating on social media, prompting widespread discussion and criticism in the locality. However, the authenticity of the video and the circumstances in which it was recorded could not be independently verified.
According to police and local sources, Shariful Islam is a resident of neighbouring Azizpur village and the son of Mozammel Morol. Residents claimed that he had a personal relationship with a married woman living in Townshreepur North Para. They alleged that Shariful entered the woman’s home on Monday night, after which several local people became aware of his presence.
The residents reportedly gathered around the house. According to their account, they subsequently entered the room after opening or breaking the door and claimed to have found Shariful and the woman in an objectionable situation. The two were allegedly kept there for some time before police arrived at the scene.
Police later took Shariful into custody and brought him to the police station. The woman was not taken into police custody, and it was not immediately clear whether any legal action had been initiated against her.
Local Union Parishad member Bablu Rahman said residents had kept the two individuals detained until late at night. He also said Shariful was locally known as an active Jamaat-e-Islami worker and had reportedly held an organisational position at ward level.
Abdus Salam Master, president of Ward 7 of Debhata Union Jamaat, confirmed that Shariful was an active worker of the organisation. He said, however, that he had not been aware of the incident when it occurred and later learnt about it through local people. He added that the organisation would verify the allegations before deciding what action, if any, should be taken.
Rezaul Karim, inspector of investigation at Debhata Police Station, said police went to the scene after receiving information that local residents had detained a man over allegations of immoral activities. Shariful was subsequently taken into police custody. After a case was filed against him, he was sent to court on Tuesday morning.
The incident has also triggered debate over the circulation of videos on social media. While such footage can quickly draw public attention, its authenticity, context and origin cannot always be established independently. Legal authorities generally rely on evidence gathered through formal investigation and due process rather than social media material alone when determining the facts of a case.
The episode comes against a wider backdrop of controversy in Satkhira’s political arena surrounding videos circulated on social media. Previously, a video-related controversy reportedly led to news of the expulsion of Jamaat-e-Islami leader and Satkhira-4 constituency lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party. No information was available to establish any direct connection between that earlier controversy and the latest incident in Debhata.
Police said Shariful had been sent to court after the case was filed against him. The subsequent legal process is expected to determine the facts of the allegations and whether further action is warranted. As the case proceeds, the allegations against all those involved will remain subject to investigation and judicial consideration.
