A local leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has been expelled from the party following allegations of an illicit relationship with the wife of a disabled party worker in Habiganj’s Chunarughat Upazila.
Nurul Islam Sajol, who served as the Ameer (president) of Gazipur Union Jamaat, was removed from all party positions after the organisation concluded that the allegations against him were substantiated. The decision was taken during an emergency organisational meeting of the Chunarughat Upazila Jamaat on Thursday (6 August).
Sajol is a resident of Jarulia village under Gazipur Union in Chunarughat Upazila.
According to local sources, the incident occurred at around 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday night, when villagers reportedly found and detained Sajol while he was allegedly engaged in an illicit physical relationship with the wife of a disabled Jamaat worker in the Gajaria Para area. The incident quickly drew the attention of local residents and party members.
Following the detention, an initial attempt was made to resolve the matter locally. Union Jamaat Secretary Mizanur Rahman reportedly mediated discussions after assurances were given that the matter would be addressed fairly. Sajol was subsequently released into the custody of his elder brother, Kajol Mia, pending further organisational review.
The allegations were later referred to the Upazila and local Jamaat leadership for formal consideration. After reviewing the matter and examining the complaint, party leaders concluded that the allegations were credible. As a result, the organisation decided to expel Sajol from the post of Gazipur Union Ameer as well as from all party responsibilities and organisational positions, citing the need to uphold party discipline and protect its organisational reputation.
Speaking about the decision, Chunarughat Upazila Jamaat Ameer Md Idris Ali said the party had acted only after verifying the allegations through its internal process.
“After the allegations of immoral conduct against Nurul Islam Sajol were found to be true, local party leaders decided to expel him from the organisation. To ensure the continuation of organisational activities in the union, Mawlana Md Abdul Matin has been appointed as the acting president.”
The appointment of an acting union president is intended to ensure that routine organisational activities continue without interruption following Sajol’s removal.
Attempts were made to obtain Sajol’s response to the allegations. When contacted by telephone by a journalist, he initially disconnected the call. Subsequent attempts to reach him were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone was found to be switched off. Consequently, his version of events was not available at the time of publication.
Political parties and other organisations in Bangladesh typically maintain internal disciplinary procedures to address allegations of misconduct involving office-bearers. Such measures are generally taken to enforce organisational rules and preserve public confidence in party leadership.
As of the latest available information, no official statement has been issued by law enforcement authorities regarding any legal proceedings related to the incident, and there has been no public comment from the family involved. The reported expulsion remains an internal disciplinary action taken by the party based on its own organisational review.
