Lionel Scaloni’s future as Argentina head coach remains uncertain, but the players appear united in their desire for him to continue. Despite the speculation surrounding his position, members of the national squad have publicly voiced their support for the 48-year-old coach and urged him to remain in charge beyond the expiry of his current contract in December.
Scaloni’s position has come under renewed scrutiny following Argentina’s 1-0 defeat by Spain in the recent World Cup final in July. The result prompted speculation that he could step away after an extraordinary spell in charge. The uncertainty has not diminished the players’ appreciation of what Scaloni has built since taking charge. Argentina’s squad gathered at their training centre in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, with several players making clear that they want the coach to remain with the national side for the long term.
Young midfielder Nico Paz highlighted Scaloni’s influence on the early stages of his international career. The coach was responsible for giving him an opportunity at senior level, something Paz clearly remembers.
“He is one of the most important coaches for me. He was the one who gave me my first opportunity, and I hope he stays,” Paz said.

“We hope he stays. He is the main architect of this national team, so naturally we want him to continue,” Romero said.
Goalkeeper Juan Musso echoed those sentiments, pointing to the respect and affection Scaloni has earned within the squad. He said the coach’s achievements and his contribution to the team had created a strong bond between the players and their manager.
“We have enormous respect and affection for him because of what he has achieved and what he has built with this team,” Musso said.
Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni also spoke positively about Scaloni’s contribution to Argentine football. He said the coach had given everything to the national side in recent years and had brought considerable joy to supporters across the country.
Scaloni’s record provides the clearest explanation for the players’ backing. During his eight-year tenure, he has overseen 104 matches as Argentina manager. His achievements include the 2022 World Cup, as well as back-to-back Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024.
Under his leadership, Argentina also produced a remarkable 36-match unbeaten run. Across the 104 games mentioned, Scaloni’s record stands at 76 victories, 18 draws and 10 defeats, underlining the consistency that has characterised his tenure.
The 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar was the defining moment of Scaloni’s time in charge, ending Argentina’s long wait for the global title. The Copa América successes before and after that tournament further strengthened his standing with the squad and supporters.
Now, with December approaching and negotiations with the AFA still ongoing, attention is firmly focused on whether Scaloni will agree to continue. The players have made their preference clear: they want the coach who helped construct Argentina’s recent era of success to remain at the helm.
