A political activist associated with the youth wing of the Bangladesh Awami League was stabbed to death on Saturday morning in Goalanda Upazila of Rajbari district. The deceased, identified as 40-year-old Shariful Islam, also known as Hira, was attacked around 9:15 am at Torai More, a busy junction near the local railway station area.
Shariful, son of Javed Bhuiyan from Bahadurpur village in Ujanchar Union, was residing at his in-laws’ home in Ward No. 7 of Goalanda municipality. He served as the publicity secretary for the Goalanda municipal unit of the Jubo League while earning his living as a line controller at a local electric easy-bike stand.
Investigating officers and relatives revealed that the victim and the alleged perpetrator, Kamrul, a resident of Kumrakandi village in Goalanda municipality, were long-standing friends. However, their relationship had recently soured due to a persistent dispute regarding financial transactions.
The fatal encounter occurred as Shariful was returning home after finishing his morning shopping at Goalanda market. Upon reaching Torai More, Kamrul confronted him on the street. A heated altercation escalated rapidly when Kamrul brandished a knife and launched a sudden assault, inflicting severe stab wounds on Shariful.
Bystanders rushed to the scene following the attack and transported the heavily bleeding victim to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex. Attending medical staff examined Shariful upon arrival and pronounced him dead from severe trauma and blood loss.
Law enforcement personnel promptly arrived at the health facility and the crime scene to initiate an investigation. Shahidul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) in Rajbari, confirmed the fatality, stating that preliminary enquiries strongly point towards a monetary disagreement as the motive behind the killing.
Police officers have dispatched the body to Rajbari Sadar Hospital mortuary for a formal post-mortem examination. Law enforcement agencies have launched a manhunt across the district to apprehend Kamrul and any potential accomplices involved in the assault.
