Dhaka, 8 August: Foreign exchange rates remain an important consideration for Bangladesh, where remittances from overseas workers, international trade, imports and exports, overseas education, tourism and other cross-border transactions generate substantial demand for foreign currencies. Changes in exchange rates can directly affect the amount received by families of expatriate Bangladeshis, as well as the cost of imported goods and services.
On Saturday, 8 August, the quoted exchange rates for the Bangladeshi taka against a range of major international currencies showed considerable variation. Among the currencies listed, the Kuwaiti dinar recorded the highest value against the taka, at Tk 403.01 for one dinar.
The Bahraini dinar followed at Tk 328.35, while one Omani rial was valued at Tk 321. The British pound stood at Tk 167.03, and the Swiss franc at Tk 149.25. The euro was quoted at Tk 145.23.
The US dollar, one of the most widely used currencies in global trade and financial transactions, was valued at Tk 123.34. The Singapore dollar stood at Tk 97.03, while the Canadian and Australian dollars were quoted at Tk 88.51 and Tk 87.67 respectively. The New Zealand dollar was valued at Tk 72.99.
For Bangladeshi expatriate workers and their families, exchange rates for Middle Eastern currencies are particularly significant because a large number of migrant workers are employed in the Gulf region. One Saudi riyal was quoted at Tk 33, while the UAE dirham stood at Tk 33.69 and the Qatari riyal at Tk 33.99. The Malaysian ringgit was valued at Tk 30.23.
The exchange rates of lower-denomination currencies also differed substantially when measured against the taka. One Japanese yen was valued at Tk 0.786, while one South Korean won was quoted at Tk 0.08740365. The Indian rupee stood at Tk 1.25.
The figures provide a snapshot of the relative value of the taka against selected currencies on the stated date. However, quoted exchange rates should not necessarily be treated as the exact amount a customer will receive when buying or selling foreign currency. Banks and authorised money exchange businesses may apply different buying and selling rates, while transaction charges and other applicable costs can also influence the final amount.
Exchange rates can move in response to changes in currency demand and supply, international market conditions, trade flows and broader financial developments. The rate available for remittance, cash exchange, card transactions or bank transfers may therefore vary depending on the nature of the transaction and the institution handling it.
For people planning large international payments, overseas travel, tuition transfers or remittance-related transactions, checking the latest applicable rate before completing the transaction remains advisable.
The rates below reflect the quoted values for 8 August and may change at any time as foreign exchange market conditions evolve.
