India’s planned tour of Bangladesh has encountered fresh uncertainty, with reports suggesting that the Indian side may prefer to remain at home and host Afghanistan during the same period.
According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India is keen to stage a three-match Twenty20 International series against Afghanistan in New Delhi on 13, 15 and 17 September. India has reportedly agreed to the proposed schedule, creating questions over its previously announced white-ball tour of Bangladesh.
India are scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on 28 August for a six-match limited-overs series comprising three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals. The matches are currently scheduled to be played between 1 and 13 September.
With less than three weeks remaining before the proposed tour begins, the Afghanistan series in India has raised doubts over whether the Bangladesh tour will go ahead as originally planned. No final decision on the Bangladesh series has been confirmed in the information available, but the overlapping schedules have added to the uncertainty.
The matter has also drawn attention in Bangladesh. Youth and Sports Minister Aminul Haque said on Monday night that discussions regarding the Indian team’s visit were continuing. Speaking at an event in Dhaka, he said the foreign ministers of the two countries were discussing the issue.
The uncertainty comes at a time when the Bangladesh-India series had already been arranged as an important bilateral engagement. The proposed tour includes matches in both the one-day and Twenty20 formats, giving both teams an opportunity to prepare for their respective international commitments.
For Bangladesh, the visit of India would also carry considerable significance given the teams’ competitive history in limited-overs cricket. India remain one of the strongest sides in international cricket, while Bangladesh have developed into a capable opponent, particularly in home conditions.
India last toured Bangladesh in 2022. That visit included three one-day internationals and two Tests. Bangladesh won the ODI series 2–1, while India claimed the Test series 2–0. The results reflected the contrasting challenges of the two formats, with Bangladesh securing a memorable limited-overs series victory before India dominated the longer format.
The latest situation therefore leaves several questions unanswered. The key issue is whether India will travel to Bangladesh as scheduled, whether the existing itinerary will be revised, or whether the Afghanistan series will take priority.
For now, Bangladesh officials have indicated that discussions between the two countries are continuing. Until an official decision is reached, the status of India’s proposed August-September tour remains uncertain.
