A 22-year-old man died from electrocution just hours after bringing his newlywed wife home, turning what was meant to be a joyful wedding celebration into a night of mourning in Daulatpur.
Ahmed Anas Bappi, son of Yusuf Ali, died after apparently coming into contact with electricity while moving a standing fan at his home in the Gacher Diar Schoolpara area of Hoglabaria Union. The incident occurred at around 2am on Friday, 21 August, following the completion of his wedding ceremonies the previous day.
Anas had married 18-year-old Saira Khatun, daughter of Saiful Islam of Bahermadi Alinagar in Philipnagar Union. Although the couple’s marriage had formally been solemnised about two months earlier, Saira was brought to Anas’s family home on Thursday afternoon as part of the traditional wedding arrangements.
The family had planned a reception and feast for Friday afternoon. Preparations were continuing late into Thursday night, with relatives and guests involved in arranging food and setting up a ceremonial canopy. Anas himself was reportedly supervising the preparations and helping to organise the arrangements.
According to family members, Anas attempted to move a standing fan at about 2am when he was accidentally exposed to an electrical current. He was seriously injured in the incident and was quickly taken by relatives to Kushtia General Hospital. Doctors on duty examined him and declared him dead.
News of his death spread rapidly through the neighbourhood, leaving relatives and guests devastated. Only hours earlier, the family home had been filled with wedding celebrations, conversations and preparations for the following day’s feast. By dawn, the atmosphere had changed completely, with relatives mourning and the newlywed bride overwhelmed by grief.
Local Union Parishad member Milan Hossain said Anas had died after receiving an electric shock from the standing fan. He said the couple’s marriage had been solemnised around two months earlier and that Saira had only been brought to her husband’s home on Thursday. The planned reception was due to take place on Friday, but the sudden accident brought the celebrations to an abrupt end.
Daulatpur police station officer-in-charge Khaledur Rahman confirmed the incident. He said police were sent to the scene after receiving the report and were monitoring the situation.
The tragedy has cast a deep shadow over both families. A day that had been expected to mark the beginning of a new chapter for the young couple instead ended with the death of the groom, leaving his bride widowed on the very night she entered her husband’s home.
The incident also highlights the risks posed by faulty electrical appliances, damaged wiring and careless handling of household electrical equipment. Even routine tasks such as moving a fan can become dangerous if an appliance, cable or electrical connection is defective. Basic precautions, including disconnecting electrical appliances from the power supply before moving them, can help reduce such risks.
