The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has issued a direct warning to grassroots members contemplating rebel or independent candidacies in forthcoming local government elections, confirming that anyone defying official party directives will face severe disciplinary repercussions. The party’s stance was outlined by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi during a press briefing in Dhaka.
Rizvi made clear that party nominations and endorsements will not be imposed arbitrarily from above. Instead, prospective candidates are being evaluated through direct consultations with grassroots organisers, taking into account candidate competence, standing in the community, and demonstrated loyalty to the organisation across union, upazila, and district tiers.
To avoid internal divisions and fractional voting, the BNP intends to field or back a single consensus candidate in every respective contest. Rizvi emphasised that any party member choosing to stand independently against the party’s vetted choice will face prompt organisational penalties, ranging from immediate suspension to formal expulsion from all party committees.
With the upcoming local government polls set to proceed without official party electoral symbols, Rizvi instructed local leaders to exercise rigorous scrutiny before consolidating behind individual aspirants. The absence of symbols makes disciplined grassroots coordination essential to ensure that the party’s core support remains united behind designated candidates.
Concluding his remarks, Rizvi stressed that maintaining internal discipline and remaining closely attuned to the public represent the party’s central duties. He urged party workers to engage actively with local communities and communicate pro-people initiatives, noting that deep, consistent contact with ordinary voters remains the most effective deterrent against political opportunism and indiscipline.
