Police in Sunamganj have arrested a 35-year-old man along with a substantial stash of illicit narcotics in a targeted anti-narcotics drive. The operation, launched based on a confidential tip-off, led to the recovery of 1,305 pieces of Yaba tablets from the possession of the suspect, Shish Ahmad, whose permanent home is in Doulatpur village under the neighbouring Shalla upazila.
The security sweep unfolded late on Monday night, specifically around 10:30 PM, near the Khalpar Hati Bridge in the Shyamarchar area of Charnarchar Union within Dirai Upazila. According to local law enforcement accounts, officers received credible intelligence indicating that illegal drug trading was actively taking place at the location. Prompted by this information, a dedicated police team headed by Dirai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam, alongside Sub-Inspector Kanon Kumar Das, rushed to the scene to intercept the suspects.
As the law enforcement personnel closed in on the target area, two suspicious individuals suddenly panicked and attempted to flee on foot. Quick-thinking local residents joined forces with the police to give chase, successfully overpowering and detaining Shish Ahmad while his accomplice managed to slip away into the darkness. In the presence of local witnesses, officers searched the detained suspect and discovered 1,305 Yaba tablets carefully stashed inside seven separate zip-lock packets. Authorities estimate the street value of the recovered narcotics to be approximately 652,500 Bangladeshi Taka.
Following the seizure, a formal case was lodged at the Dirai Police Station under the stringent provisions of the Narcotics Control Act. Two individuals have been named in the primary chargesheet: the arrested suspect Shish Ahmad and Ron Dash, a 42-year-old resident of Hashimpur village in Dirai Upazila who managed to escape during the initial raid. Following preliminary interrogations and the completion of necessary paperwork, police transferred Shish Ahmad to the local court under secure escort on Tuesday morning.
Dirai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam emphasized that law enforcement agencies maintain a zero-tolerance stance against narcotics trafficking. He added that proactive anti-drug operations will continue across the region to dismantle local distribution rings and bring all associated offenders to justice, safeguarding local communities from the destructive spread of illicit substances.
