Hamza Chowdhury Linked With Derby County Move

Bangladesh international midfielder Hamza Chowdhury could be heading for a new chapter in his club career, with Championship side Derby County reportedly showing strong interest in signing the Leicester City player.

The potential move has emerged as Hamza’s long-standing association with Leicester enters an important stage. According to Mike McGrath, a transfer correspondent for The Telegraph, Derby are keen on bringing the midfielder to Pride Park as they look to strengthen their options in the middle of the pitch.

Derby finished eighth in the Championship last season and are understood to be assessing additions that could improve their squad. Hamza’s ability to operate in more than one position is believed to have made him an attractive option.

There is, however, no agreement in place at this stage. It remains unclear whether Derby have made a formal offer to Leicester or whether discussions between the two clubs have progressed beyond initial interest. There is also no indication yet as to whether Derby would seek a permanent transfer or attempt to sign Hamza on loan.

The situation is particularly significant because Hamza’s contract with Leicester runs until June 2027. With the midfielder approaching the latter part of his current deal, Leicester may have to weigh up whether to retain him or consider a transfer while they can still secure a fee for his services.

A move to Derby would also represent an opportunity for Hamza to return to a higher level of English football. Leicester are currently competing in League One, the third tier of the English football pyramid, while Derby remain in the Championship, one level above.

For Hamza, the prospect of playing regularly in the Championship could therefore carry considerable appeal. The division provides a demanding competitive environment and remains a significant stage for players seeking to progress towards the Premier League.

Hamza’s versatility is one of the qualities that has defined his career. His primary position is defensive midfield, where he is valued for his ability to protect the defence and contribute to the team’s work without possession. He can also operate at right-back, giving managers additional tactical options when building a squad.

The 28-year-old came through Leicester’s academy and made his first-team debut in 2015. His development included several loan spells, during which he gained experience away from his boyhood club. He represented Burton Albion, Watford and Sheffield United before returning to Leicester after completing his most recent loan spell.

His career has consequently been closely linked with Leicester for more than a decade, from his early development in the academy to senior football and subsequent loan moves. A permanent departure would mark a significant change for a player who has spent much of his professional career within the club’s system.

Hamza has also become an increasingly prominent figure for Bangladesh since choosing to represent the country at international level. His presence has generated considerable interest among Bangladeshi supporters, while his experience of English football has made him an important figure within the national set-up.

For the moment, though, the Derby interest remains at the stage of reported transfer activity rather than a completed deal. Neither Hamza nor Leicester City or Derby County has issued an official statement confirming negotiations.

The coming weeks could therefore prove decisive. If Derby make a formal approach and Leicester are prepared to consider a transfer, Hamza could soon find himself weighing up a move away from the club where his professional career began.
