Police recovered 334 rounds of ammunition from beneath the soil beside a drain near the boundary wall of Bogura Zilla School on Sunday, after workers discovered a metallic object while excavating the area for a drainage project.
The ammunition was found at around 11am on 30 August as workers were carrying out excavation work for the construction of a master drain by Bogura City Corporation.
According to police and local sources, the workers had been digging near the drain wall when one of them noticed what appeared to be a metallic object buried beneath the soil on the southern side of the structure. The worker informed his colleagues, who then alerted the police.
Police subsequently arrived at the site and conducted an excavation around the spot where the object had been found. During the search, they recovered 334 rounds of ammunition from beneath the ground.
Bogura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ibrahim Ali confirmed the recovery. He said the workers had found the ammunition while carrying out excavation work and that a total of 334 rounds had been recovered from the location.
The exact origin and age of the ammunition have not yet been established. Police said it would be determined after the recovered rounds undergo examination.
According to Ibrahim Ali, investigators are considering two possible periods from which the ammunition could have originated. One possibility is that it may date back to the Liberation War. Another is that the rounds could have been among ammunition looted from a police station during the July mass uprising in 2024.
The officer said no definitive conclusion could be drawn about the origin of the ammunition until the necessary examination had been completed. Further information would be provided through the appropriate senior authorities once the examination and related inquiries progress.
The discovery was made incidentally during ongoing infrastructure work in the city. The workers had been engaged in excavation for the master drainage system when they encountered the buried material. After being informed, police took charge of the recovery process.
Authorities will now examine the recovered ammunition to establish its nature and possible origin. The findings are expected to help determine when and how the rounds came to be buried at the site.
Police have not provided any information suggesting that the ammunition was recently placed there, and no specific individual or incident has so far been linked to the recovery. The matter remains under investigation pending examination of the recovered rounds.
