Bangladesh made a commanding start to their Under-20 Women’s Asian Cup hockey campaign, sweeping aside Chinese Taipei 7-0 in their opening match in Mokpo, China, on Saturday.
The emphatic scoreline reflected Bangladesh’s control throughout the contest. From the opening exchanges, the Bangladesh side played with attacking intent and repeatedly tested the Chinese Taipei defence. Their pressure eventually produced the breakthrough, with Kona Akter scoring the opening goal.
Bangladesh did not ease off after taking the lead. Ema and Airin Akter Ria then added to the advantage, with both players finding the net twice. Their finishing gave Bangladesh a firm grip on the match and left Chinese Taipei struggling to contain the sustained pressure.
The Bangladesh attack became even more assertive as the match progressed. With the defence maintaining a clean sheet at the other end, the team was able to commit players forward and continue looking for further openings. Chinese Taipei failed to find a response as Bangladesh maintained their momentum.
The decisive phase came in the fourth quarter. Bangladesh captain Sarika Rimon took centre stage, scoring twice to complete a memorable individual contribution and push the team’s tally to seven. By then, the result was effectively beyond doubt.
The 7-0 victory gives Bangladesh an ideal platform at the beginning of the tournament. A large winning margin can provide valuable confidence, particularly for a young side competing at a continental level, while the clean sheet also underlines the team’s ability to remain organised while sustaining an attacking approach.
Bangladesh will not have much time to celebrate the opening victory, however. Their next challenge comes on Sunday against Pakistan. The second match is likely to demand another disciplined performance, as Bangladesh look to build on their strong start and maintain momentum in the competition.
For now, the opening result offers plenty of encouragement. Seven goals, no reply and contributions from several players have given Bangladesh a powerful beginning to their Under-20 Asian Cup campaign.
