Three people were killed and at least 30 others injured after a passenger bus lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch in Gopalganj’s Muksudpur upazila on Sunday morning.
The accident occurred at around 10.45am on the Dhaka–Khulna highway, beside the Gerakhola Bridge in Muksudpur. The bus, operated by Tungipara Express, was travelling from Khulna towards Dhaka when it reportedly lost control after reaching the Gerakhola area and veered off the highway before falling into the ditch beside the bridge.
The impact left the bus badly crumpled, causing three passengers to die at the scene. At least 30 others sustained injuries, with 12 reported to be in a serious condition. The injured were taken to the Muksudpur Upazila Health Complex for medical treatment, where those in critical condition were admitted.
The identities of the three deceased passengers had not been established immediately after the crash. Authorities were working to determine their identities and assess the condition of the other passengers. Officials also warned that the number of casualties could rise depending on the severity of the injuries.
Police and Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene after receiving information about the crash and began rescue operations. Local people also joined the effort as rescuers worked to bring passengers out of the damaged vehicle and move the injured to hospital as quickly as possible.
The location of the crash, beside a bridge and a roadside ditch, made the rescue operation particularly urgent. The extent of damage to the bus indicated the force of the impact, while the large number of injured passengers required rapid medical attention.
Sergeant Md Azadur Rahman of Bhanga Highway Police Station confirmed the accident. He said a Tungipara Express passenger bus lost control in the Gerakhola area and fell into the ditch, leaving three people dead at the scene.
The immediate cause of the driver losing control of the bus had not been established at the time of the initial report. Further information is expected as authorities assess the circumstances surrounding the crash and complete their initial inquiries.
The accident has once again highlighted the risks faced by passengers travelling on major inter-district highways, where a sudden loss of control can have serious consequences, particularly around bridges and other potentially hazardous sections of road. For now, however, the focus remains on treating those injured, identifying the deceased and determining how the crash occurred.
