Barcelona continued their impressive start to the La Liga season with a commanding 5–0 victory over Valencia at Mestalla, securing a fourth consecutive league win under manager Hansi Flick.
The result leaves Barcelona on a perfect 12 points from four matches and strengthens their position at the top of the table. Lamine Yamal was the standout performer, scoring twice, while Fermin Lopez, Raphinha and Pedri contributed one goal each in a dominant display from the reigning champions.
Barcelona controlled the contest from the opening whistle and rarely allowed Valencia to settle. They enjoyed around 74 per cent possession and registered 10 attempts towards goal, underlining their authority throughout the match. Valencia struggled to cope with the visitors’ attacking movement and sustained pressure.
The breakthrough came as early as the sixth minute. Fermin Lopez supplied the pass for Yamal, who skilfully moved beyond a Valencia defender before finishing with his first touch. The young Spain international appeared to have scored again just two minutes later, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Barcelona doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute. Lopez received the opportunity to make his mark on the scoresheet, producing a low, angled effort that beat the Valencia goalkeeper and nestled close to the far post.
Despite Barcelona’s control, Valencia briefly threatened after an error from the visitors. Dani Gomez took advantage of the mistake and produced a shot, but Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia reacted impressively to keep it out.
Barcelona continued creating opportunities before the interval. Yamal sent one effort narrowly wide, while another attempt from Lopez struck the goalkeeper’s leg before going behind. At the other end, Garcia made further interventions to preserve Barcelona’s clean sheet and ensure his side entered half-time two goals ahead.
The visitors increased the pressure again shortly after the restart. In the 50th minute, Raphinha added Barcelona’s third goal after receiving Lopez’s delivery and applying a simple finish from close range.
It was another significant contribution from the Brazilian forward, who had already scored in the previous three matches. His latest strike took his tally to six league goals for the season and brought his overall La Liga total to 50.
Barcelona continued to threaten after making it 3–0. A header from Rodri struck the crossbar, while Lopez and Anthony Gordon were unable to convert further chances. Raphinha also came close when he narrowly failed to make contact with another delivery from Lopez.
The fourth goal finally arrived in the 79th minute. Dani Olmo found Pedri, who unleashed a powerful effort to beat the Valencia goalkeeper and further underline Barcelona’s superiority.
Flick then made a change, replacing Pedri with new Brazilian signing Gabriel Jesus. The forward was introduced for his Barcelona debut as the visitors looked to manage the closing stages while maintaining their control.
There was still time for Yamal to add another goal. In the 84th minute, the teenager found the net for the second time, completing his brace and putting the result beyond any doubt.
Barcelona eventually secured a comprehensive 5–0 victory, completing a thoroughly dominant performance at Mestalla.
The three points take Barcelona to 12 from a possible 12 after four matches. Real Madrid are their closest rivals at this stage, sitting on nine points.
For Flick, the performance offered further evidence of Barcelona’s attacking depth. Yamal’s goals, Raphinha’s continued scoring form and contributions from Lopez and Pedri gave the side several different routes to goal. With four victories from four matches, Barcelona have made an emphatic early statement in their bid to maintain their position at the top of Spanish football.
