Australia’s selection panel has shown faith in Marnus Labuschagne, naming the embattled top-order batter in a 16-man Test squad for the upcoming October tour of South Africa.
Despite an extended run of lean form, the 30-year-old retains his spot for the three-match series, which will see tests played at Durban, Gqeberha, and Cape Town. Labuschagne’s place in the side has drawn considerable debate following a prolonged decline in output. Since registering his last Test century in July 2023, he has managed an average of just 24.69 across 43 innings. His recent outings in Bangladesh proved similarly unproductive, yielding scores of 1, 31, and 4. Having already been omitted from Australia’s One-Day International squads for recent tours to Zimbabwe and South Africa, the upcoming return to the country of his birth presents a critical juncture for his red-ball career.
Chief selector George Bailey offered an open assessment of the batter’s current position while maintaining confidence in his underlying abilities.
“We are not shying away from the fact that we want more runs from Marnus,” Bailey noted. “However, we firmly believe he still has a positive contribution to make to this side.”
Young all-rounder Cooper Connolly earns a recall to the Test setup. While Connolly missed out on the recent Bangladesh Test series, he caught the eye during the same tour with a maiden ODI century in June. Although yet to establish a track record of heavy scoring in first-class cricket, his potential and quick learning curve persuaded selectors to include him. Bailey praised Connolly’s adaptability, highlighting his eagerness to refine his game whenever integrated into the national side.
In the bowling department, Michael Neser makes his return following a recovery from injury, providing additional seam options alongside a formidable pace attack led by captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Scott Boland.
Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann joins primary spin option Nathan Lyon in the squad. While conditions in South Africa rarely warrant a dual-spin strategy, Kuhnemann’s presence serves a strategic purpose in training, offering Australia’s top order crucial preparation against left-arm orthodox bowling ahead of facing South African spinner Keshav Maharaj.
The upcoming contest forms a key segment of the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship cycle. Tensions remain high between the two sides following the previous World Test Championship final at Lord’s, where South Africa defeated Australia to claim the trophy.
