Pakistani Track Pasoori Makes History with One Billion YouTube Views

The viral sensation Pasoori has achieved a historic milestone for Pakistan’s music industry, becoming the country’s first music video to cross the one-billion-views mark on YouTube. Released on 7 February 2022 during the 14th season of Coke Studio Pakistan, the captivating duet by Ali Sethi and Shae Gill has evolved from a regional favorite into an enduring global phenomenon.

Coke Studio marked the historic event across its official social media channels, sharing the news on Instagram and extending heartfelt gratitude to audiences worldwide. The song’s ability to maintain a steady, high-volume audience over four years highlights its profound cultural resonance and lasting artistic appeal.

Written and composed with a seamless blend of classical South Asian folk melodies and modern pop production, Pasoori immediately captured public attention. The contrast between Ali Sethi’s rich, trained vocals and Shae Gill’s soulful, effortless delivery created an irresistible dynamic that dominated social media and digital platforms almost overnight.

The video’s staggering statistics on YouTube are matched by incredible numbers across audio streaming platforms. On Spotify, the track has surpassed 405 million streams, maintaining its status as one of the most played Pakistani songs in history. Its popularity was equally undeniable on global search platforms: in late 2022, Google revealed that Pasoori was the second most searched song globally for the year, whilst simultaneously securing the top spot on Google’s ‘Hum to Search’ feature.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Pasoori’s trajectory is its global audience composition. An estimated 90 per cent of the song’s total YouTube viewership came from outside Pakistan, with streams spanning over 60 countries. This widespread foreign engagement successfully brought contemporary Pakistani music into mainstream international listening habits.

The song’s cultural footprint expanded further when Marvel Studios selected it for inclusion in the soundtrack of Ms. Marvel, introducing the composition to millions of Western television viewers. Capitalizing on this cross-cultural success, Coke Studio Africa later commissioned an official Afrobeats rendition, uniting Ali Sethi with African artists Marwan Moussa and Reekado Banks.

Ultimately, Pasoori stands as a defining moment for Pakistani artists, proving that local cultural expressions and native languages can comfortably cross border lines and thrive on the world’s biggest stages.
